“Hannah, Hannah, wake up! You have to get ready for school.”
She flipped her long pig-braids toward the wall and hid under a My Little Pony blanket. “Do I have to get up, Mommy? Just 5 more minutes, please….I was having such a good dream.”
“Now, Hannah.” I grab the blanket and rip it off the bed. “Get up and get ready.”
“Mommy, stop. That’s not fair.”
“I am going to make your lunch and your breakfast. You’d better be downstairs in 5 minutes or you are in trouble. You won’t even have time to eat.”
On the way out I trip over a teddy bear and step on a baby doll. “Hannah, I thought I told you to clean up before you went to bed. You will have your room spic-and-span before you play today, young lady. Now, come out of that bed!”
“Yeah, yeah, grumpy, grumpy.” Hannah complains.
I stare at her for a moment and then walk to the kitchen. “That girl is too much!” I grab a lunchbox and take out the sandwich fixings. “If she doesn’t start changing her attitude soon I don’t know what I’ll do.”
I slap the bologna and cheese between two pieces of bread and reach for the carrots. “I wish Kevin would make her lunch sometimes. He just sleeps in every morning and I’m stuck making lunches every single day.”
“Hannah, are you ready?”
“Almost.”
“Well, get a move on. You don’t have all day.” I toss cereal into a bowl and throw in some raisins. “Now, Hannah!”
“I’m right here, Mommy. I just needed to find my blue shirt.”
“Hannah, that shirt has a hole in it! You are not wearing that to school.”
“Why not? It’s my favorite shirt.”
“Because I said so. Eat your breakfast so you can go to school.”

“Oh, no, Hannah are you finished yet? You need to leave if you are going to make it on time.”
“Mommy where are my blue shoes? I can’t find them.”
“How should I know. You never put them where they belong. Wear the pink ones and get going.”
“I don’t like those! They don’t look right. Pink is a baby color.”
“Hannah Blaine, you’d better get those shoes and get to school or you will be in big trouble!”
Hannah grabs her stuff and waves goodbye. “Bye Mommy. Can’t you walk with me today?”
“It’s right across the street. I’m sure you can make it on time. See you after school.”
I shut the door and walk after the smell of coffee. I grab a mug from the cabinet and the engraved white letters catch my eye. Seven days without prayer makes one weak.
I sigh. Alright, Lord, are you trying to tell me something?
I sit at the table and bow my head.
I look up after a while. 8:30 Time to get Michael and Kevin up.
“Michael, sweetheart, are you awake?”
Michael rubs his arms on his eyes and smiles. “Hi, Mommy.”
I caress his cheek and kiss his forehead. “Are you hungry, sweetie?”
“Yeah. Can we have French toast? I’m really hungry.”
“Sure thing. Just get your clothes on first. I’ll go wake up Daddy.”
I walk in and kiss my husband’s lips. “Good morning, sleepyhead. Another day awaits.”
“Is it that time already? I don’t have to be at the office until 10 today.”
“It’s almost 9 now so I’ll go make your breakfast. Do you want a packed lunch today?”
“That’d be great. You fix the best lunches. Just no bologna, please.”
I smile. “Well, then make sure you grab your lunch and not the kids’!” I walk downstairs. Lord, I lift your name on high. Lord I love to sing your praises. I’m so glad your in my life. I’m so glad you came to save us.
