Scared me more than any other.
Ann had turned an impish look to say
“Lets play Good Mother, Bad Mother.”
My sister, Laurie, loved this game
Or is that what she said?
Could I be wrong – she felt the same?
“Let’s play hide and seek instead.”
Ann always played the role of “Mom”
Who began with friendly hugs,
Then turned on her temper time bomb.
“Let’s catch some lightening bugs.”
Some moms in fairytales were cruel,
But Ann’s smile could twist to creepy;
She’d laugh and say we broke a rule.
“Let’s go to bed – I’m sleepy.”
My heart would pound and long to end
This game of waiting for Mom’s words.
Would she scream or be a friend?
“Let’s go out to feed the birds.”
What made us play a game like this–
Will mom love or hate her daughters?
As I sip my tea and reminisce,
My son intrudes my thoughts for quarters.
Now each day I play this game
With my kids who challenge life.
Choose good or bad; it’s still the same;
My words can love or stir up strife.
I’m thankful not to play alone
And be the nagging mom I dread.
My Father helps me from His throne
To be the Proverbs mom instead.
****
Just to clarify…I’m not the “Proverbs mom” yet. Someday, I hope to bear some resemblance.
