Rules beyond what you should have learned in Kindergarten:
I. There’s a God. He made everything, including you. He demands respect, regardless whether you believe in Him of not. One day you will stand before Him and He will not need to ask you any questions because He will know everything about you: the who, what, when, and why of all your actions, words, thoughts, and the motives behind all of them.
II. Since He will be your judge, it is strongly suggested you don’t make anything else a “god” in your life. This doesn’t necessarily mean to carve something and bow down to it. It includes anything you put before God and giving Him your best.
III. One of the things God really doesn’t like is for you to use His Name in vain; to put it simply, don’t cuss. This is very disrespectful to your Creator and, like it was mentioned in #1, you WILL face Him one day. Don’t make Him angry.
IV. Don’t be a workaholic. Remember the saying, “No one on their death bed wishes they had spent more time at the office”. God, Himself, rested after He created the heavens and earth (and humans) in six days; not because He needed to rest physically, but He wanted to set one day a week aside to show men that they needed to rest from their work and thus “remember Him”. One can remember God in many ways but the best way is to do it is with others. Yup, that means going to church somewhere that believes in God and worships Him.
V. There is a rule set by God that includes a promise if you keep it: to honor your mother and father. Sometimes that’s hard to do because you did not pick them, God did and He did it for a very good purpose. We may not know His purpose here, but will when we get to heaven. The promise is for a long life; a long life with God, which is a blessing in and of itself.
VI. Murder is not good, both in God’s eyes and man’s. Jesus, God’s Son, went even further; “If you hate someone in your heart, you’ve already killed him” (remember God knows the intent of the heart, our thoughts).
VII. It’s also wrong to look at a woman (or man) with lust because, yes, God sees this also. He considers it adultery, just the same as if you did it physically.
VIII. Stealing – the same. In God’s eyes, planning on doing it, or wishing to do it, is just the same as if doing it. That doesn’t mean to go ahead and do it. Take this as a warning.
IX. Lying, even a “white lie”, such as gossiping about your neighbor, does more harm than you can image, both to the person you are gossiping or lying about and yourself. It’s for your own good, here and now, but also when you all stand before your Maker.
X. Coveting, wanting what someone else has, doesn’t help a thing. Wishing you had what someone else owns can lead to a whole bunch of problems, like all the above.
Jesus said there are two great commandments or rules to live by. The first is to love God with every part of your being and the second is to love your neighbor as yourself. He said all the rules of life are covered in these two. Too a tough job to live by the rules of life? The Giver of Life is available to help by just asking Him.
