“Not fair, you’re still here. You just don’t get it do you. Maybe you don’t want to play this game at all. Maybe you want to be the finder first, huh? Is that it? Ok, turn your back, close your eyes and start counting. When you reach a hundred you come and find me. Here I go. Don’t forget to look for me.”
“Psst, hey young man. Over here.”
“What? Who said that?”
“Come this way. Down this alley.”
“But it’s dark down there. Phew and it stinks like garbage that’s gone bad.”
“Of course, it’s the perfect place to hide. You are playing hide and seek aren’t you?”
“Well yeah, but how did you know.”
“Listen, I’ve been playing games like this for a long time. Trust me I know a trick or two. There is door at the other end of this alleyway. Inside is the perfect place to hide. He will never look for you there. You’ll be safe.”
“Are you sure?”
“Sure I’m sure. Come on, what have you got to lose?”
“Well…”
“Look, just try it, go on inside and see for yourself. There are all sorts of thrilling and stimulating things waiting for you, all kinds of tasty things to eat and drink. You won’t be disappointed, trust me.”
“That’s the second time you’ve said that.”
“What?”
“Trust you. I don’t even know you, although there is something about you- something vaguely familiar, but scary at the same time. I just don’t know. It all sounds exciting, but…”
“What ever, just go away you’re beginning to bother me. Someone else will be along any minute and they won’t be so timid. I’ll just take them with me instead. Now beat it. Get lost.”
“Wait. I can leave any time, if I’m not having a good time I mean.”
“Sure, sure what ever you say.”
“Can I just look inside first?”
“Follow me. I’ll open the door for you. Now behold the wonders that can be yours.”
“Wow, all the lights, the music. The aromas are so tantalizing, I’ve never smelled anything so sweet. It’s kind of crowded though. Look at all those people. Some look like there having a great time, but those there, way in the back, look so sad and… lost.”
“Look, are you going in or not? He’ll be coming for you any time now. You don’t want to be caught out in the open like this, do you? No. So just step through. That’s it. Oh, I uh... forgot to mention the fee.”
“Fee?”
“Sure, you didn’t think all this was free, did you?”
“I don’t have any money with me.”
“Don’t sweat it. We can work out something.”
“Like what?”
“It won’t cost you a dime of your hard earned cash, just a little token that you don’t use or need anyway.”
“Like what?”
“You soul- that’s all. Now hurry He’ll be here soon.”
“But I thought you said He wouldn’t look down here.”
“NINETY-NINE, ONE HUNDRED. READY OR NOT HERE I COME!”
