I’m groggy, but the coffee’s nearly brewed.
My time with God I try not to neglect,
although unbidden thoughts sometimes intrude.”
This half an hour is His, and His alone.
I rise before my husband and the dawn
with no computer, music, or cell-phone.
Alas, five minutes is already gone.
“Lord, I invite You now into this day.”
Fly, how dare you land upon my nose?
“Be my first thought as I walk in Your way.”
Did I forget nail polish on my toes?
“Oh God, You are most worthy of my praise.”
Perhaps I ought to use another name.
“Almighty, Adonai, Ancient of Days...”
I wonder if the Packers won their game.
“Lord, forgive my weak and wandering mind.”
Is this the day I need to leave at eight?
“Into Your care my thoughts I now resign.”
I’d better hurry so I won’t be late.
“Guide and direct me, keep me free from sin.”
Can’t wait to share the juicy news I’ve got.
“Lord, please renew my focus once again.”
I’d better go turn off the coffee pot.
“Oh yes, Father, and if it be Your will,”
This is my most repeated daily prayer.
“Help my students listen and be still.”
They’re all ADHD I do declare!
“And I, unhappy one and poorest of men, how shall I bring you into my house, I who scarce know how to spend a half hour devoutly? And would that I spent once, even one half-hour worthily.” -Thomas a Kempis Imitations of Christ
“…What, could ye not watch with me one hour?” –Jesus (Matthew 26:40 KJV)
