Back when I use to be a real movie buff, there was one that I watched in the mid-eighties called “Back to the Future.” This was a movie about a scientist who invented a time machine. Michael J. Fox played a character named Marty, a teenage boy who ended up going back in time to the 1950s when his parents were in their teenage years.
There ended up being three movies in this series of films. In the second movie in the series, there was a scene where Marty (Michael J. Fox), went twenty-five years into the future to where his children were all grown up. In the course of the movie, Marty ended up going back to the 1950s as he did in the first film, and made a blunder that caused two different timelines to appear in the future. When he got back to the future again, everything looked normal at first, but he soon discovered that something was drastically wrong.
He and the scientist (played by Christopher Lloyd) discovered that that timeline was a corrupt one. In the timeline Marty went back too was full of casinos, ruled by gangs, thugs, and everyone carried a gun for protection. They discovered that this timeline ran directly parallel to the correct timeline. The remainder of the film was spent erasing the corrupt timeline so the only one that existed was the correct one that Marty had first visited.
This is often times the way it is with our lives as Christians. Sometimes God will have us at a certain place, and He wants us to be still and listen, but our unbridled zeal wants to do otherwise. There are times when God just wants us to grow and learn of Him, but we’re wanting to “flitter” here and there, desiring to do things for God, when at that moment in time, He just wants to do something in us. We want God’s second best, because we become too impatient to wait on His best. Sometimes God has to break us before He can use us. We get confused as to why things don’t happen in our life, but we must take a look at who’s timeline we’re on, ours or His. God desires for us to be about His business, and He gives us permission not to totally understand His will and plan. But if we wait on His timing, we’ll be lunged forth into God’s marvelous destiny and plan, and not just our concept of it.
