Each of you has a destiny; a purpose for which you are created. Although you all have basically the same parts and capabilities, you will be used by many different kinds of people, for many different types of reasons. You all have the capacity to send and receive communications, yet you have no control over what kind of communications these might be - or how they might be received by the people to which they are sent.
You may be the lifeline for an elderly woman who hardly ever hears from her family. She may be lonely and too frail to reach out for help in her own community, and your ring may bring her comfort or even get her the help she needs. You may be a way to spread gossip for two giggling teenage girls, or to spread the news about a new student in class. You may be part of a prayer chain, where a church tells each of its members about one of the body who needs prayer and support. You may be a lifeline for an addict who is reaching out for the person who can help guide him through the next hour without using drugs. You could be the information line for a library or medical hotline.
Some of you may end up as fax machines, and never hear any noises except the scream of the computer, as documents are sent from one place to another. Some of you may have message boxes, which fill all day with the grumbling voices of creditors, because your owners are struggling with debt. Some of you may never rest during the day; as a fast-talking salesperson delivers their practiced pitches to customer after customer. Some of you may hear the gruff, whispered voices of illegal transactions and cringe at the way you are used to further the causes of evil. Some of you may be pay phones, and have a different destiny every few minutes. Some of you may connect sweethearts. Some may connect friends, and some may reunite enemies.
My point is that you can’t choose. Your destiny isn’t in your own hands. You are an instrument to be used by the person who purchases you. This may seem unfair, but think of it this way: even the human beings who purchase you are subject to destiny, just as you are. They may think their lives are their own to direct and control, but in reality they are mere instruments; with as varied a destiny as any of us. Any of them can find themselves at the mercy of life’s twists and turns at any time; and they may feel powerless to change it. So what do they do? If they are smart, they trust the One Who frames their destiny, and they ask Him to give them guidance and show them the way.
As you prepare for your own destiny, I can only encourage you to be as the humans you serve. Be an instrument, available for their use. If these humans are able to trust the Master of their Destiny, can you do any less?
