Nice how Harold becomes a seeker - just as he was sought by his teacher.

[I had a bit of trouble figuring out the ages of the kids and placing the story in my mind. My experience with "elementary" students is that they are children and not yet adolescents. So you and I may have an age or nationality gap.]
This story makes me smile. I love the detail of the teacher's stockings and her wisdom in finding jobs for the boy to do -all written engagingly.

I love the lines about 'formidable' being Mrs. Barnes maiden name or something. I think I know the same teacher!!
Very descriptive piece of writing. I loved: "she spat out in an underpaid, unmarried, leg’s-hurting her tone of voice" says perfectly how she was feeling.
Great job!

Harold’s frustration comes across well. There are some scenes here that are literally begging to be expanded further. Ah the agony of that 750 word limit!
A sad account that is probably all too often true.
