“In fact, everybody, I no longer felt afraid of Him. Now what I mean by that is while He was being falsely charged and later murdered, I had denied that I even knew Him. I had seen Him perform miracles; I had even cast out demons in His name. He had given me purpose and a hope for the future. He was the Son of God and He had called me His friend, and how did I return His kindness? In His greatest moment of need of support, I denied even knowing Him. So rightly I would be afraid of Him if He were to come back from the dead and visit me. Wouldn’t you have been?” Peter asked, waiting for every one of his captivated attendees to nod their heads in agreement.
“But my fear had been replaced by an awe and love for Him because of His infinite kindness towards me. You see, I had gone fishing with a few of the others and guess who had shone up! Jesus! Now, to tell you the truth, I had mixed feeling about seeing Him. I loved Him and was overjoyed to see Him alive, but I also was afraid, ashamed, and embarrassed. But there on that beach He forgave me, giving me a glimpse of the life I would learn to live with Him. To this day I can still be found getting red in the face if I dwell too long on my rejection of the Christ not to mention other sins of mine both after and before that. I know however that this is just another tactic of the Enemy. If he can get me to dwell on my failures and not the victory we have in Jesus, the Beloved of the Father, then I cease to have peace in God. And if peace with God isn’t what Christ came for then what was?”
“Oh, sorry did I sidetrack a bit there? I hope you don’t mind. I am getting a bit older,” he offered, emitting a few giggles from the crowd, “its just that thinking of these things helps to comfort me at times.”
So, there we were, all of us His followers gathered there on that hill. And there on the Mount of Olives, Jesus told us that we would spread His Gospel to all the world. Not a one of us knew what that would really mean. We were, in the faith, what you are in life, children. We have grown in faith like you will in life, but something I’ll never forget, something that Jesus stressed often, is that we all must be like children to enter the kingdom of God.” Eyeing some of his most mischievous charges he added, “and He doesn’t mean in troublesomeness!”
“Peter,” one of the little girls asked, “That was such a great story but shouldn’t you get going now? The…
“Yeah we’re going to be late for church.” Piped one of the mischievous boys in an attempt to add to the conversation, and thus draw attention to his awe-inspiring wittiness.
“…Church is already gathering.” Finished the little girl.
“Going to Church, now that is a peculiar concept!” Laughed Peter, “Why, what do you think we’ve been doing all this time? We are the Church my boy!” he stated as he herded the flock of children inside the ever-filling house, making ready to continue his mission of spreading the Gospel across the world.
Peculiar concept indeed, he thought to himself.
