Topic: Bold (emotionally) (08/30/07)
Below the surface I can often feel
The sadness welling up, about to burst.
I numb myself to it as I’m afraid
To let it out, that I’d feel even worse.

I bury feelings deep within my heart.
Afraid to let them loose, what would I do
If rising pain came up and drown my soul?
I don’t know how I’d ever make it through.

And yet by keeping ev’rything inside,
I’m trapped, held hostage by my unshed tears.
This isn’t living, feeling like I do.
Can I be bold enough to face my fears?

I’ve heard the opposite of fear is faith.
Perhaps it’s time to let it all give way.
I trust in God, that He won’t let me down.
I’ll feel the fear, but do it anyway.

As I release the dam, a flood of tears
Comes gushing forth, I’m nearly washed away.
And yet God’s hand is there to rescue me
To reach inside and hold my fears at bay.

To feel the pain that I’ve been holding in
Takes courage like I’ve never ever known.
Among the hardest things I’ve ever done,
And I could never face it all alone.

Although I’m overwhelmed by all I feel,
I will commit to working through the pain.
For it’s the only way to truly heal.
I will find freedom past the teary rain.

"Freedom past the teary rain". I held on to that hope, too, in the weeks and months following the death of my husband. There IS a freedom when you feel you can take a breath again and not be tormented by past pain. Some vivid and descriptive phrases through out this poem. You brought many word pictures alive in this poem.

I think our subconscious produces numbness as an alternative to pain. The problem is that numbness begins to spread to all of life until we are unable to feel anything at all. In the Lord's presence is a safe place to let it out and hopefully also among His body of true believers. Relationship is how it started in Genesis and relationship is still what its all about.

Rarely does a poem reflect this much inner reality and unmasked anguish. So well done! You've presented the depth of pain yet offered the healing element of hope. There's soemthing about the second stanza that really stays with me...that image is especially gripping for me. Thank you, dear poet, for this sensitive entry.
