They were best of friends during the worst of times.
Paige and Ashley were like twins--they went to the same school, hung around with the same girls, wore the same clothes -- they even had the same cell phone!
Paige worked at a local "family" restaurant--one of those places that seems like they have every item you can think of on the menu, but are the master of none. It was a tough, but fun place to work, because it was a big "hang out" for her friends. One very busy Saturday night, Paige received an urgent text message from Ashley.
OMG P PCM
[Oh my God Paige please call me]
Fearing the worst, Paige immediately went to the Manager and asked if she could leave early.
Strangely and miraculously--because it was so busy--he let her leave.
Paige speed-dialed Ashley, as she walked out to her car.
"Hey Ash--I got off early--what's up?"
"Oh my God Paige..." Ashley started sobbing.
Paige stopped. "Ash--what happened? Where are you?"
After she could finally talk, Ashley replied, "I'm at the hospital...there's been an accident...
our friend..."
"Oh no...."
"Our friend Ben was driving... he hit a tree..."
"I'm on my way..."
Many more urgent text messages came, but Paige ignored them as she raced there as fast as she could. She remembered something her dad--he was also her Pastor--told her when she was a little girl:
"Bad things will happen, but remember Paige, 'All things work together for the good.' Pray, pray, pray!"
As she pulled into the Emergency Room parking lot, and parked, Paige cried out to Jesus in her car, interceding for Ben, for Ashley, for a miracle. Then it struck her -- now she knew why her boss let her go early on that busy night. "God knows..." her dad always said.
"Thank You Jesus..." whispered Paige.
She picked up her purse, and wiped tears from her face, and went into the hospital. Air rushed into her face as doors slid open.
Ashley ran up to her, "Paige, thank you, thank you for coming. I have good news!"
"What happened?"
"They saved Ben. He's pretty banged up but he's going to be okay--it's a miracle!"
Paige started crying.
"What's wrong?" asked Ashley, concerned. "You're going to make me cry again--"
"I was just praying in the car. God... God has already answered our prayers..."
"I need to talk to you about that..." Ashley replied.
"Let's go sit over there--"
"Okay."
Paige wiped tears from her eyes and face again, as she realized that years of prayers for Ashley were being answered right at that moment.
Ashley started slowly at first. "Paige, this whole thing with Ben has got me thinking about a lot
of things. Life is short. Life is... fragile... like remember when Katrina happened and all those people died?"
Paige nodded, listening, and crying.
"Well, I got to thinking about them and Ben and why am I here? and? you-know."
"What, Ash?"
"You-know--all that church and God stuff you talk to me about. I need to know everything. I want to see for myself. I want to come to church with you tomorrow."
Paige really started crying then.
"Oh, and one more thing, Paige..."
"Anything..."
"What must I do to be saved? You-know, 'born again'?"
