Josh was always falling in love, but it never lasted. Those encounters and relationships were more of an infatuation than anything. This time would be different. This time he was hooked, and he would never let go. And from what he could tell, his lover felt the same way.
This relationship was forever. It began innocently enough, just a little flirtation. At first. Josh began to enjoy the company of his new found friend, though, and wanted to pursue something more. In the beginning it was just casual, but then the romance blossomed. It began like a spark, but soon became a raging fire.
It was all Josh could do not to think about his new love. Day and night, the mere thought turned into desire, and desire turned into action. Money became no object because she was that important to him. He would spend what it took to keep her satisfied, because this was it. His true love.
Josh had pet names for her, several in fact. She hadn’t come up with any for him yet, but it would be just a matter of time. All he knew is he couldn’t live without her. He needed her and she needed him. He loved her. That’s why he wanted to share his newfound joy with Joey.
They met at the usual place, the authentic Italian restaurant on the other side of town. It was the kind of place to make one feel at home. It was inviting. It was special. It was here he regularly met his new love, too. She made him feel special. She made him feel good.
“Hey Joey, over here in the corner,” Josh called out after downing a breadstick he was enjoying while waiting for his friend.
Taking a seat opposite Josh, Joey put some breadsticks on a plate and began to enjoy the savory offering. “So, buddy, tell me about this new love in you life. It’s the real thing this time, huh?”
“Well, what can I say, she's the real deal.”
“So tell me about her.”
“We met at a party. I wasn’t really looking, ya know? It just kind of happened. We were introduced, and I was smitten. I guess you could say it was love at first sight.”
“You really think that happens?” Joey asked, knowing that Josh usually falls hard at first, but until now it’s never really been love.
“Yeah, I know what you’re going to say. It’s been that pattern for me over and over. But this time, it’s different, ya know what I mean? This one is going to last. I just know it’s going to be a long-term relationship.”
“And how do you know that?” a skeptical Joey ventured between bites of his breadstick.
“Well, it’s like this. I’d do anything to be with her. She’s all I think about. This one has lasted longer than any of the others, and our relationship is still going strong. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her. I guess you could say I’m addicted.”
“It sure sounds that way,” Joey said with a chuckle.
“And another thing, it’s not just me. She’s got her arms wrapped around me and won’t let go. It’s all good. She’s my love, my companion, my friend. I can’t imagine being without her. If she were to vanish from my life, I’d go crazy. Man, I couldn’t live without her.”
“All right, all right already,” Joey said as he put his hands up in surrender. “I give up. I think you are totally smitten. You sound like you’re head over heels in love. She’s really got a hold on you.”
“She does,” his voice rising in response.
“So, what’s her name?” asked Joey, not able to withstand the suspense any longer.
“Cocaine.”

Hopefully you wanted to hit us right square in the gut with your ending...because that's certainly how it hit me! Seemed like too abrupt an ending, but when it comes to the subject of drug addiction, probably no more words were required to make your point. Sobering look at the allure of addiction.
