In the beautiful garden God planted
Lived Adam with rib-wife, Eve.
When that old snake appeared to her,
I wish she had told him to leave.
Imagine hard work without sweating
Or childbirth without any pain,
Just time to look forward in every day
To walk with the Lord again.
But how do I dare to point finger at Eve
And to lay upon her all the blame
When that same snake has come to me,
And I’ve listened; so much to my shame!
He’s suggested that I ought to tell a lie,
A little white lie, to be sure,
But any untruth that I may speak
Can keep me from being pure.
He’s urged me to hold in my heart
Thoughts of jealousy, anger, or pride,
And the truth, though I hate to admit it,
Is that sometimes I’ve kept them inside.
But though there’s a snake in my garden
Who brings me temptation each day,
The Lord God is always beside me
And washes my sins all away.
