Slender form
Strong and young
Pierced without thought
Laughter, mocking grimaces
Reeling closer
Eyes malignant and menacing
Head bowed forward
Thorns pricking soft flesh
Warm ruby drops
Glistening at temples
Sinister words
Taunt a loving a heart
Parched dry lips
Twisted and papery
Begging for cool water
Splashed with vinegar
Hateful words
And rough hands near
Sun and dust
No relief from elements
No escaping the pain
Snaking through weary limbs
Devouring strength
Unable to shut out evil
Sun grueling
But for a moment, darkness
Sorrowful eyes questioning
Seeking divine reasoning
Sentry fearful
Turns away from reverent eyes
Body spent
Breath ragged and faint
Eyelids flicker, then close
Shutting out the punishment
Man’s wickedness
Against all of mankind
Wooden cross
Rough and simply fashioned
Sense of duty
Jeers now irrelevant
Lips set firm
Hands balled into fists
Countenance softens
Sin is borne with sweet purpose
Pain fleeting in the grand scheme
Nails driven deep
Yet only love
Can hold Him there
