The human body has many defense mechanisms in place to keep it safe from things that should not be there.
When my daughter was small she put a pencil up her nose and the eraser broke off and lodged in her nostril. I could not reach it for fear of pushing it even further in. It looked like we would be making a trip to the ER for some help. But before that happened she suddenly started sneezing, achoo, achoo, achoo and the eraser flew across the room. The body had done its job and expelled what should not be there.
As Christians we have a defense system to keep us from making decisions that could be harmful to us, things that we do not need to do. We have all seen the cartoon drawings of someone trying to make a decision of what to do and there is an angel sitting on one shoulder and the devil sitting on the other. Each one is whispering their appropriate stand. “You really should do this”, or “No, do not do this”. We must choose which voice to listen to.
God however, in His infinite wisdom made a way that is much more effective for us to gauge our decisions . He has given us the Holy Spirit. John 16:13 says “However, when He the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth;..(NKJV)
Romans 8:14 also says”For as many as are led by the Spirit of God...” (NKJV)
In addition the Holy Spirit also leads us to understand the Bible. He is the One who guides us and helps us to comprehend what the Bible is trying to say to us..There is a passage in I Corinthians 2 that explains how the Holy Spirit has revealed the things of God to us. Verse 13 of this chapter says,
“These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” (NKJV)
The Holy Spirit also leads us to salvation. John 16:8 says “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of judgment.” (NKJV).
We could spend much time discussing the attributes of the Holy Spirit and the work that He does as our Defense System. He will direct us toward right and divert us from wrong if we will listen and obey His word. The Holy Spirit is how God speaks to us. May we listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit and let “His” direction be the guiding force in our lives.
