My favourite’s a cheeky bird who played a trick on me.
I wasn’t in this country long and didn’t know so much
Went on a camping trip outback to learn about the bush.
The first night, sounds and movements stirred imaginings absurd
With shrieks and howls and weirdest sounds none like I’d never heard
But when it came to daylight, lacking sleep, my mind half crazed
This raucous laughing started while the world slept on unfazed.
I gingerly undid the zip, snuck out and peered around
To see what awful monster could make such a chilling sound
And there I saw him in a gum, head cocked amusingly
While laughing loud and laughing long at such a fool as me.
I wasn’t finished learning yet in kookaburra school
He had another priceless trick to teach this clueless fool;
For dinner in the evening we cooked a barbeque
The finest piece of sirloin steak with snags and onions too.
The steak was done just right for me, I dashed to grab a plate
I heard a swoosh and saw a flash, I charged, alas too late
He was flying high and fast, my sirloin in his beak
And I was left to rue this laughing bird with such a cheek.
But that he left the onions and sausages untouched
To take the choicest piece of meat was cheek beyond too much;
I’ve lost the taste for sausage ever since the fateful day
I saw my choicest chunk of steak take wings and fly away.
These days I’m more acquainted with the ‘dangers’ of the bush
And very mindful of the lessons once learned in such a rush
I’ve grown to love the kookaburra and the laugh he makes
But never take my eye off him when barbequing steaks.
