FaithWriters.com news and information for the write-brained Christian!
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." – 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 (NIV)
We all know that the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It is filled with the life-giving breath of God Himself. As Christians, we should find daily encouragement, motivation, conviction, and inspiration in every verse we read.
In addition to the Bible, God provides many other means of inspiration for us, too. People, nature, music, art, fiction and non-fiction books, can offer inspiration in various ways, prompting us to live our lives in a more purposeful way. As writers, we sometimes need a boost of inspiration, don't we? Last month, I asked FaithWriters members what sorts of things inspired them as writers. Be sure to read the Out of Mouths of FaithWriters section at the end of this newsletter to see what some of them had to say.
SPEAKING OF INSPIRATION…
The FaithWriters conference was a huge success and provided loads of inspiration! Between spectacular speakers, terrific teaching, fantastic fellowship, and lots of laughs, the 2011 conference was definitely a weekend to remember. Even with the several-hour power outage (due to a squirrel biting through the power line! Yes, it's true!), the conference went on, exactly as scheduled. Our shirts may have been a little damper without air conditioning, but we didn't let the situation dampen our spirits! And hey, this small glitch made the conference even more memorable and gives us something to talk (and chuckle) about.
Members have been posting photos and recaps of the conference on Facebook and their personal blogs. You can find links to some of them on the FaithWriters message boards: http://www.faithwriters.com/Boards/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=49
Thanks to all who made the conference the incredible success it was. Don't know how we'll top this year's conference, but we're looking forward to doing everything we can to make next year's conference even better!
Big thanks to Joanne Sher for taking over the FaithWriters blog last month. Joanne has been doing a wonderful job! On the blog, you'll find writing tips, helpful articles on the craft of writing, author interviews, devotionals, member shoutouts, and lots of other fun stuff. TIME IS RUNNING OUT…
Only two more months to enter the FaithWriters Page Turner contest! This exciting and prestigious contest was created exclusively for Platinum members and offers a huge prize package, including $800 cash, free editing, publicity, a beautiful plaque, free registration to the FaithWriters 2012 conference, and consideration of publication by new Christian publisher, Breath of Fresh Air Press. Two runners-up will also be awarded highly commended award plaques and will receive half price editing of their winning manuscripts. Several of our past winners and runners-up have gone on to acquire agents and/or contracts for publication! You could, too!
The focus is on fiction this time around, so if you have written a novel, started a novel, or have an idea for a novel, here's your chance! As the title of this contest indicates, the main criteria is that page-turning quality we all look for in a novel.
All that's required is the first chapter and a brief synopsis of the entire book (or projected book). Your novel does not need to be complete to enter, but is encouraged, so that if your entry is selected as the winner, you can take advantage of the free editing of your entire manuscript. So polish up that chapter and enter today! The deadline is October 31st and winners will be announced on December 1st.
If you are already a Platinum member, you can get complete information on this year's Page Turner contest here: http://www.faithwriters.com/myaccount/FaithWriters500/contest-pageturner.php

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF FAITHWRITERS
Last month, I asked this question: WHAT INSPIRES YOU AS A WRITER?
Thanks to all of you who responded! Here is what a few of our fellow FaithWriters members had to say:
"A walk on the beach or just a quiet place, where God can talk to me. I long to help others on their Christian journey." – Sharon Force
"When I look upon a magnificent sunrise or sunset, or see an intricately colored butterfly feasting upon the nectar of a uniquely created blossom, I cannot help but give praise to the Creator. In turn, this inspires me to write and share with others about the One who made it all." – Joan Hall
"Watching people and trying to guess what their lives are like from what few clues I can garner. Clothing, facial expression, body language, how they interact with their spouses or children: any or all can spark my imagination and set the stage for a great story." – Janice Cartwright
"My biggest inspiration has always been the beauty of God's creation and, of course, His Word. I have found that reading books, visiting with other writers and attending writer's conferences have stirred the creative spirit within me, as well." – Brenda Kipp
"What inspires me is watching my readership grow, knowing that God is reaching more people with my articles than I ever thought was possible. That means more people around the world are hearing His message and are, prayerfully, responding to Jesus with a hearty Yes!!!" – Bobby Bruno
Next Month's question:
In the U.S., we celebrate Sweetest Day on the third Saturday in October. Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and candy company employee from Ohio, started Sweetest Day because he wanted to bring happiness to orphans, shut-ins and under-privileged. His intent was to show these people that they were not forgotten. Today, Sweetest Day is a means to celebrate the sweet people in our lives. So here is your question for next month, as it relates to your writing:
IS THERE ONE PERSON YOU WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE (EITHER PAST OR PRESENT) WHO HAS ENCOURAGED YOU IN YOUR WRITING JOURNEY?
Send your brief (and creative) response to [email protected]. Please keep your answers to 1-2 sentences. Check back next month to see if your answer was selected to appear.
THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING FAITHWRITERS.COM – THE HOME FOR CHRISTIAN WRITERS. YOU ARE A BLESSING!
