ENCOUNTERS IN ISRAEL
I gave this trip to You
Asking that You guide
In every way.
A Palestinian woman on a city bus in Jerusalem
Bitterly recounts her life.
She is the only breadwinner in her family.
The daily crossing at the checkpoint,
An ordeal.
A Jewish man on a bus from Tiberias
Holds a photo of a young, pretty, blond woman.
I ask if she is his wife. She is his sister,
Killed while eating in a pizzeria.
A suicide bomber entered and blew himself up.
An Arab Christian speaks to me of his faith,
Beaten and imprisoned
For passing out tracts,
About Jesus.
He tells me he sees Jesus in my eyes.
I see Jesus in his.
I think of the easy, prosperity gospel
Preached in my part of the world,
And beyond.
I am a richer woman.
Thank You.
