True story, just as it happened. You answer the question at the end...
Having lost over a dozen chickens to varmints and the live trap proved
ineffective I was at a lost on how to protect my dear flock.
One day I noticed the motion sensor light in a box in the garage and, as
sometimes happens, "a light came on": That's it! Mount the light on the
chicken house and spook whatever is coming around.
The next day I set to work, thankful I had already run power to the chicken
house years before. Starting late in the day I hurried to get it finished
before dark. Right at twilight I had power to it and ready to try it out.
Adjusting the sensor's direction to pick up a wide range of movement on the
ground, picking the most sensitive setting, and choosing a five minute "on"
timer it was ready.
The chickens had been waiting for me to get out of the way so they could get
into their house. I was really proud of my idea and couldn't wait to see
how it worked. The chickens started to the chicken house door, ready to go
to roost. As the first chicken got within sensor range the light came on,
they all stopped, chicken heads popped up - "Oops, the sun is back up" and
back to pecking they went. Five minutes later the light went out and again
they started back to their house. "Pop" the light came on and - "Oops, the
sun is back up" and off they went pecking again. I lost three chickens that
night because they never went back to roost.
I'm not sure who the bird brain was.
