TITLE: Unplugg'd
By Jacob Gibson

1 John 2:15 says "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him." James 4:4; "Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God." Wow, these verses convict me every time I read them. Sometimes it's so easy for me to let the things of the world distract me from what matters most and forget why I'm here. I don't want to waste my time on meaningless pursuits when there are souls that need to hear the good, nay, greatest news of salvation. This is a rock song and there are five things I want in critiques: should I use the word "I" or "you" more (my perspective or someone elses)? Should I make everything rhyme instead of just the chorus and bridge? Is the message of the song clear and focused? (I think I combined the point of letting go of the world along with watching less TV, etc)? Does this sound too much like my other song "Join the Rebelution"? And do you have ideas for better lyrics? Thank you.

Also, I would like to make something clear. I have heard some people say that Christian rock and Christian dance music isn't good, and since I often like to write lyrics for those kind of songs I better explain. Although the original meaning of rock and roll has a carnal meaning, the kind of Christian rock I make is usually the softer kind without a lot of screaming and it doesn't have to mean the same thing. And when I say something is Christian dance, I'm referring to uptempo music like the Newsboys, music that makes you want to dance by yourself and not with someone else in a sinful way. God can use many genres of Christian music to reach out to the lost and we should be careful not reject all new ideas when they could be tools for salvation and encouragement. However, I do know that there are christian rock bands that are almost impossible to distinguish from secular.
1. Over 20 years living on this planet
I've clung to it and called it my home
But the longer I'm here the more alien I feel
Could someone tell me why I feel this way?

Do you ever get the feeling that you don't belong here?
Do you ever feel like there has to be more?
Like a bird in a cage, a fish out of water
Everything around you is holding you down

I think I've had enough... and now I'm...

Sh-sh-shuttin' down the sy-stem!
It's time to log off and dis-con-nect myself
C-c-cutting the wires tangled around me
Kill the power and resurrect myself

T-t-t-turnin' off the music!
All the endless noise flooding my senses
J-j-j-jumping out of the matrix
Find what I need beyond the fences

2. The violence and filth around me everywhere
So much hostility to the love of Christ
Materialism, laziness, and selfishness
How much can we take before we've had enough?

I may be in this world but I'm not a part of it
God's kingdom is what I'll live and die for
There's people who need me, there's too much to do
Life is just a flash before my waiting destiny

Turn off the computer
Shut down the TV
Give your mind a break from the electricity.

Let go of worthless hobbies
Get away from the screens
You've got a hungry spirit and you're not a machine....

One button away from real life, real life
Dare ya to push it and see what's outside
Livin' for Him is real life, real life
Run this race for God and feel the fire inside

One motion away from real life, real life
Love not the world and all that it prizes
Givin' all to Him is real life, real life
His beautiful love is what existence comprises

*guitar plays notes going down to sound like something shutting down*

John 15:19, 1 John 3:1, Romans 12:2, Phillipians 2:15, 1 Timothy 6:7, Titus 2:12, James 4:4, 1 John 5:4

Fact: I have a custom license plate on my cat that says ALL2HIM (along with a Jesus fish symbol). Not only is it a way to witness to people but it's also a reminder to me that everything belongs to Him.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.
