Clang bang crash came from the backend of the old beat up Volvo I was driving down that steep winding mountain road. It sounded like the car was falling apart. I looked in my rear view mirror expecting to see car parts trailing me. Then I remembered the box of hubcaps in the trunk. The box must have tipped over on that last sharp curve. Instead of car parts I saw there was a car behind me that wanted to be in front of me. Afraid to go faster I decided to pull over to let it pass. Where could I do that? This road was narrow and twisting. Along the right side of the road was a ravine. The road was cut into the mountain side. When it became less steep and curvy about a two block stretch of closer to straight and not as steep road came into view. Did my eyes deceive me? Was there a paved turnout up ahead just before the next curve?
Pulling into the turnout I stopped, but the car behind me did not go by. Looking in the rear view I saw it had also pulled into the turnout and stopped. Gazing forward I saw a car appear from around the mountain curve. A truck was passing it on my side of the road. Had I not been in the turnout there would have been a head on crash involving three cars and a truck. Chances are good the Volvo and I would have ended up crunched in the gully. The person driving the car behind me could not have known about the coming danger. The approaching vehicles did not appear before our two cars stopped in the turnout. I know why I pulled to the side. But why did the car behind me?
Do I believe in angels? Yes and not just because the Bible mentions them many times. I have no doubt that without their intervention I would have ended up in a ravine. Someday I hope to meet the Angels who were on mountain duty that day.
