My kids were off for Spring Break last week, which gave me a good idea for this week’s Tackle it Tuesday Topic. Here’s your assignment:
You are twelve years old and all of your friends are going out of town for Spring Break while you are stuck at home. You resign yourself to the idea of being bored all week, but then something happens to add some unexpected excitement. In 100 words or less, tell about what happens to make your Spring Break anything but boring.
Grab your creative helmet and tackle it!

“Jason! Back to your room and clean up.”
Jason stared out the front window at the white stuff eclipsing the rusty tin can trailer homes. The illusion of living in a neighborhood with boundless meandering hills was small consolation for this snowed-in March morning with no friends to share it with. Mom’s voice obscured the scratchy announcement about everything being closed down for a few days. If only he could have lived with Dad after the fight.
As if in answer his thoughts a grey figure sliced the snowy static; a bouquet of roses; Dad’s Jeep stuck in the ditch.
Yikes! *As if in answer ‘to’ his thoughts . . . nix ‘stuck’ and it stays at 100 words exactly.
:)
Ronnie stared.
Mrs. Dahlquist’s plump form was teetering precariously on a ladder propped against the cherry tree next-door, nails clenched between her teeth.
She’d already nailed one board to the trunk, vertically …
He vaulted the short fence and steadied the next board while she pounded in more nails.
It was a cross.
Brushing blossoms out of her graying curls, she smiled. “Easter, you know. Jesus ’tis the Reason for the Season.”
“But MISTER Dahlquist …?”
“Oh, let him fuss! Won’t hurt him none to have a bit of church in his yard.”
THIS was going to be interesting …
Monday morning, not wanting to get up to go a week of nothing to do. She sits on the edge of her bed and says a prayer. Her parents taught her to pray before her feet hit the floor each morning. She looks around her room. She spots her Bible on her night stand and grabs it. She opens it up to Psalm 100. The words from verse 2 stick out “Serve the Lord with gladness.” She darts down stairs where her and her mother start planing their spring break to serve the Lord in volunteering to help others.
From the window of our farmhouse, I was daydreaming about being stuck out here all week with nothing to do but my regular chores.
I realized that someone had just thrown something out of his or her pick-up truck window; and, that something was running after the pick-up as fast as its’ little legs could carry it.
The truck continued down the road with dust flying as I went out the front door; down the steps, and headed for the little black and white puppy that was now sitting in the dirt and panting; exhausted from chasing the truck.
“Mom,” Carrie whines, plopping into one of the armchairs in the living room. “Isn’t there anything I can do today? I am so bored!”
“You could read a book,” Mom suggests.
“I don’t want to.”
“You could play outside,” Mom says, gesturing outside to their acres of land on their farm.
“It’s too hot.”
Mom sighs. As Carrie sits there moping, the phone rings. Mom answers it.
“Hello?”
It’s Carrie’s dad. “Could you send Carrie outside?”
Outside, Dad’s truck and trailer pull up. Carrie’s eyes widen as Dad opens the back of the trailer and leads out… a new horse.
Bella bolted out of bed toward the stairs. Her hair still bound and clipped to create perfect spirals. Thoughts of spending Spring break in Florida with her best friend had kept her awake. Either her PJ’s were too long or the third step was too narrow. But what to Bella felt like lightening and sounded like thunder was actually a tibia fracturing. Dr.Heidelberg’s Spring “Break” joke stunk worse than his office Bella thought while sitting by the window with no signatures on her cast except her moms. The next week she liked Kimberly’s postcard but still hated tibia bones.
Bored and lonely Sarah dreaded spring break. Her mother’s advice “Find something creative to do” had sounded even more boring than yesterdays “Clean your room.” At least cleaning had resulted in finding things forgotten like the “learning how to write well!” book Aunt Cindy had given her for her 12th birthday . Later that afternoon Sarah picked up the book. By 4:30 Sarah, her notepad, and Aunt Cindy’s gift had been on an espionage mission in Paris and a Safari. “Tomorrow we set sail at sunrise.” Sarah said to her notepad turning out the light exhausted from the day’s adventurous travels.
Sorry, I just joined last night and was a wee-bit to excited. Will be sure and read instructions more carefully in the future!
LoL…welcome! I love your enthusiasm! Hope FaithWriters is a blessing to you.
This is the pits! A whole week–dead, dull and BORING! Dad said I could go with jerry and his family, but Mom always has to be the killjoy.
I’ll be stuck doin’ farm chores…some break.
“Ben, come downstairs please, there is something I need you to do.”
I knew it! Chores, grumbled Ben. “Could you get me some eggs from the barn for breakfast,” mom said smiling.’
As I opened the barn door, “ WOW!” They did it, a brand spankin’ new
Metallic blue dirt bike! Dad just stood there smiling.
I can’t believe I’m stuck at home while everyone else is at the lake for Spring Break. Now someone is banging on the door! Probably a salesperson.
“Toni, answer the door please! I am changing your brother’s diaper!”
“Ok, ok.”
When I opened the door I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was my favorite cousin, Sharon, standing there.
“I’ve come to visit you during Spring Break. We are going to have a blast! Shopping, movies, girl-stuff!”
When I looked outside I saw she was driving her mom’s convertible BMW. Oh boy, this was going to be a great Spring Break.
