Enter Rosencranz and Guildenstern (as Thing 1 and Thing 2)
CLAUDIUS: ‘Pon my soul! Here doth stroll such loyal subjects you
And comrades to Hamlet no better to have our noble Thing 1 and Thing 2
Our Rosencranz and Guildenstern here unto this Denmark hall
To honor call, within these walls, unto thee all, my royal thanks do fall
THING 1: We are thy humble servants here at thy beck and call;
THING 2: May we serve thee to our best and utmost, one and all;
CLAUDIUS: Excellent, my most noble and punctual twain
See thou then to thy charge and our most maudlin royal Dane
Sound him to his depth and divine his cause for fury
Set upon us when thou hast been a most successful jury
And then thou shalt entreat us with what thou hast discerned
And from this hand thou shalt enjoy great thanks from what thou hast learned
THING 1: We are thine ears and eyes
THING 2: Count us thy royal spies
THING 1: Thy command within us hid’st
THING 2: We shall do as thou doth bid’st
CLAUDIUS: Go then and be wise as wolves and gentle as sheep
Be thou cunning and clever but gentle and kind in this keep
THING 1: We are off to entreat our Hamlet our prince
THING 2: Then straight away shall we our report thence
(THING 1 & THING 2 Exit)
CLAUDIUS: And now shall we have this eve’s audience nocturnal
With Polonius, Ophelia’s guardian paternal
(Enter Polonius)
