“For with God nothing will be impossible.”
Luke 1:37
Christ our Creator reigns as the great God of the impossible, magnifying the glory of His Heavenly Father in all that He does. Jesus has fitted our extremely vulnerable bodies with layers of skin, which are “princely clothes” adorning and shielding us from the assaults of our deadly world. In this, we see the inconceivable.
Countless microorganisms grow and crowd upon our skin. Numerous types of bacteria and other creatures call it home. Yet, only one-quarter inch below the surface, our body is absolutely free of germs. How does Jesus accomplish such an incredible feat, keeping us from being invaded by a hoard of unwanted “guests?”
Oddly enough, God commands several different species of bacteria to flourish on the surface of our skin as a way of protecting us. Most bacteria manufacture antibiotics which prevent other kinds of bacteria from multiplying out of control. Occasional washing of our hands is a healthy thing to do, but it is also good that we cannot remove all the potentially helpful bacteria that keep germs at bay.
Our unspeakably kind Lord Jesus knitted our skin into a flexible, self-repairing, durable armor that shelters us from deadly harm all our lives. It would be easier to keep the Titanic from rusting at the bottom of the sea than to prevent bacteria from invading our body without divine help! God not only accomplishes this impossible task, but He does it with ease (Jeremiah 32:17).
Our skin also protects us from all sorts of chemicals, physical injury, and the Sun’s powerful radiation. And it’s nearly water-proof to boot! The outermost cells of our skin (epidermis) live only two weeks. Every minute 30 to 40 thousand dead skin cells flake off our body and become the dust of our homes, carrying dirt and germs with them (see Genesis 2:7).
Tough and elastic, the dermis is the thicker, denser part of our skin, hidden beneath our epidermis. (Our epidermis normally protects our sensitive dermis — a blister forms when the epidermis lifts away from the underlying dermis.)
Unlike man-made fabrics, God constantly renews our integument with fresh protein; our skin is daily being rebuilt by our Lord Jesus Christ. As we get older, this renewal of skin protein slows down. Diet and beauty products cannot save us, but long periods out in the sun speed up the aging process! Chronic exposure to ultraviolet rays will alter the nicely “crocheted sweater” of our skin into a “tangled mass of yarn,” leaving us with lots of wrinkles if we don’t use sunscreen!
Our Creator also sewed into our dermis a myriad of microscopic sensors. The sense of touch is far more complex than most people realize. Specialized nerves in each hand accurately distinguish light pressure, constant pressure, deep pressure, vibrations of all kinds, hot and cold, and sharp objects applied to our skin. Some people pride themselves in the clothes they own, but no sweater ever said “Ouch!”
The temperature sensors in our hands are so wonderfully engineered that it is possible for us to detect a change of one-half degree Fahrenheit (0.27° Celsius). Isn’t God amazing?!
Despite intensive medical research, we don’t really know how these sensors work, clearly pointing us to the mysteriousness of God...and His goodness. Without skin sensors, we would be unable to experience a gentle summer breeze, the soft fur of a puppy, or the timely warning from a cactus — "Do not handle!”
Our Creator stands vigilant watch over His Creation, jealously defending all that He has made to reflect His character and His glory (Romans 1:20). Christ’s protection of our lives is simply amazing considering the hostile world in which we live. He is, and forevermore will be, the God of the Impossible!
"The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold" (Psalm 18:2).
