Daniel’s Seventy Weeks Of Years
In Daniel Nine twenty four trough twenty six it reads; The angel Gabriel tells Daniel; Seventy sevens {weeks of years} are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up the vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy. Daniel is told that God has an exact timetable for the nation of Israel and the Jewish people. In Genesis 29:27 Laban tells Jacob to finish out his daughter bridal week; to do this Jacob had to work for Laban for seven years, therefore to the Hebrew mind, seven weeks is seven years. Daniel is told several things about these seventy period of sevens. First he is told that they are necessary to finish transgression, secondly Daniel is told the seventy sevens’ were necessary to make an end of sin, thirdly they were necessary to atone for Israel’s wickedness, fourthly they were necessary in order to usher in everlasting righteousness, when the righteousness of the eternal God would be visible here on earth. Finally Daniel is told that they were necessary to anoint the most holy, the Messiah.
Daniel 9:25 states; ”Know and understand this; from the issue of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven sevens. And sixty two sevens, it will be rebuilt with streets and a trench , but in trouble times. From the issue of the decree there would be a period of seven sevens, then there would be an additional sixty two sevens and finally there would be a period of one seven. The seventy sevens {weeks of years} is divided into three separate periods of time. The first period of sevens represent forty nine {49} years, the next period of sevens represent four hundred thirty four years {434} and the last period represent a period of seven years {7}.
The first period of sevens started when king Artaxerxes gave Nehemiah permission the leave and go back to Jerusalem and rebuild the broken down wall, and ended with the restoration of the city. This project took forty nine years {49} to complete.
The second period of sevens began after the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem and it expanded until Jesus’ crucifixion. This is a period of 434 years. Note that a biblical month consists 30 days each, one year equals 360 days. Daniel was told that through the death of the Messiah transgressions would be finishes, paid for,, His death would atone for sin and wickedness. Through the death of Messiah God would usher in everlasting righteousness, sealing up vision and prophecy.
The nation of Israel’s sin will not be totally atoned for until the completion of the final seven weeks, or seven years. This seven year period is also called the tribulation. This is confirmed in Daniel 9:26,27 were it reads; And the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and the end of war and desolation are determined. The people that destroyed the temple were the Romans, the prince that shall come {during the period of the one week} is the anti-christ, he shall confirm the covenant, or peace treaty with many { of the Jews, but not all of them} for one week and in the middle of the week { three and one half years} he {anti-christ} shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. We are told in 2 Thessalonians 2:3,4 “ Let no man deceive you by any means; for that day shall not come { second coming of Christ} except there come a falling away first, and the man of sin be revealed { anti-christ}, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called god, or is worshiped; so that he as god sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is god. This is the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet.
