Encouragement
Our favorite Old Testament Scripture is Proverbs 3:5-6:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding.
In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your path."
Here are some other Scriptures to help us with stress.
Isaiah 12:2-3:
"God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid...
for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song."
Isaiah 26:3-4:
"God will keep in perfect peace those who's mind is stayed on Him and trusts in Him."
Psalms 46 tells us the following:
1) I will not fear for I have a refuge (vs. 1-3)
2) I will not faint for I have a river (vs. 4-7)
3) I will not fret for I have a revelation (vs. 8-11)
James 4:7-10:
"Therefore submit yourselves to God; resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you.
Cleanse your hands, sinners and...
purify your hearts ye double-minded.
Humble yourselves in the sight of God and He shall lift you up."
Some statements to help with stress:
~ Make up your mind with God's help, to renew your mind daily.
~ Make sure that you are saved...for as Jesus said, "You must be born again."
~ With God's help, clean up your life. (Philippians 4:8)
~ Submit your will to God.
Matthew 6: 33: "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness....
and all these things shall be added unto you."
~ Live in the power of the Holy Spirit and not in the weakness of the flesh.
~ Walk by faith and not by sight...
The world says "Seeing is believing" but the Bible says 'Believing is seeing"
~ Praise God and witness for Him
Specific helps from Psalms 37:
Vs. 1-2: "FRET NOT"
Webster says "Fret is to cause, to suffer emotional strain, to eat or gnaw into...
to become uneasy, vexed or worried."
Vs. 3: "TRUST in the Lord and do good; so shall you dwell in the land...
and verily you shall be fed."
Vs. 4: "DELIGHT also in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart."
So much stress is from 'delighting' in the wrong things.
Vs. 5: "COMMIT your way unto the Lord; trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass."
Give yourself away in witness and ministries.
Commit to His power for nothing is too great for God's power.
Commit to His love for nothing is too small for God's love.
Vs. 7: "REST in the Lord and wait patiently for Him."
Not only are the steps of a good person ordered by the Lord, but our 'stops' also!
Vs. 8: "CEASE FROM ANGER"
One of the 7 Deadly Sins, along with Pride, envy, impurity, gluttony, sloth and avarice.
Barney Fife (of 'Andy Griffith' fame) says, "Nip it in the bud".
The Apostle Paul said in Ephesians 4:26:
"Don't let the sun go down on your wrath (advanced anger)."
Paul had more reason for Stress than perhaps any person in the New Testament...
yet he wrote many times about 'Peace'.
In Ephesians 2: 13-14: "Now in Christ Jesus, you who sometimes were afar off....
are made near by the blood of Christ, for He is our Peace."
Maybe this poem will help:
'SLOW ME DOWN, LORD' (by Wilferd Arlan Peterson)
"Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind.
Steady my hurried pace.
Give me, amidst the day's confusion, the calmness of the everlasting hills.
Break the tensions of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of singing streams that live in my memory.
Help me to know the magical, restoring power of sleep.
Teach me the art of taking "minute vacations"...slowing down to look at a flower...
to chat with a friend, to read a few lines from a good book.
Remind me of the fable of the hare and the tortoise;
that the race is not always to the swift;
that there is more to life than measuring its speed.
Let me look up at the branches of the towering oak and know that it grew slowly...
and well.
Inspire me to send my own roots down deep into the soil of life's endearing values...
that I may grow toward the stars of my greater destiny.
Slow me down, Lord."
"Sweet Peace, The Gift of God's Love" (Music and Lyrics by Peter Philip Bilhorn)
There comes to my heart one sweet strain,
A glad and a joyous refrain,
I sing it again and again,
Sweet peace, the gift of God's love.
Through Christ on the cross peace was made,
My debt by His death was all paid,
No other foundation is laid.
For peace, the gift of God's love.
When Jesus as Lord I had crowned,
My heart with this peace did abound,
In Him the rich blessing I found,
Sweet peace, the gift of God's love.
In Jesus for peace I abide,
And as I keep close to His side,
There's nothing but peace doth betide.
Sweet peace, the gift of God's love.
Chorus:
Peace, peace, sweet peace,
Wonderful gift from above,
Oh, wonderful, wonderful peace,
Sweet peace, the gift of God's love.
