While recently sidelined with back problems, I made up a game for the grandchildren. I call it the “Good News Alphabet.” I’m hoping it will encourage even more Bible verse memorization. You might like to use it in place of counting sheep as you drift off to slumber land.

See what verses you can recall as you go through the alphabet. (We might have to cheat a bit for the letters Q, X, and Z):

The “Good News Alphabet”
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Psalm 37:4
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:19-20

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10
If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? Psalm 130:3
Jesus wept. John 11:35

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it [are] the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: John 10:27

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present [you] faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, [be] glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. Jude 1:24-25

O taste and see that the LORD [is] good: blessed [is] the man [that] trusteth in him. Psalm 34:8
Pray without ceasing. 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Q - And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. Isaiah 32:17

Rejoice in the Lord alway: [and] again I say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4
Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Mark 10:14

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest. Isaiah 32:15

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. John 5:25
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed [is] willing, but the flesh [is] weak. Matthew 26:41
X - Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done eXcellent things: this [is] known in all the earth. Isaiah 12:5

Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light [are] both alike [to thee]. Psalm 139:12
Z - As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Revelation 3:19

Sorry I'm so late getting to your wonderful Alphabet Article; it's just great, and I have no trouble with the verses you wrote, my trouble is with where they are located? I'm not good at remembering the scripture reference. (I was late writing Edy, 'cause my arm is in a sling) but this was really a fun and very enlightening and encouraging read...loved it!

What a cool idea, Edy. It's amazing that you could think of so many scriptures without looking them up.

So, SO clever, Edy! Love it! By the way, your story was chosen as a "jewel" for this week. Check out the cheering section at the faithwriters' boards to see the list.

This is dear, just like my dear friend. I love how you used something bad to make something good.

Oh I do like this! I never thought about memorizing with an Alphabet. This is great, I bet kids would love to do this. A few extra spaces in the top would've helped though, I was looking for letters and thought you'd missed them until I realized they were just joined together. This was great! ^_^

I love it, Edy. I think we could expand on this and also do the attributes of God. Almighty, Bestower of Blessings, Compassionate, Divine, Eternal, Faithful, Grace, Holy.... Or a variation of the car game where the first letter has to match the last letter of the previous word. Almighty, Yahweh, Holy.... Great idea on teaching kids to hide Scripture in their heart.
