GO FORWARD!
And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever”.
“The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace”.
And the LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward”. Exodus 14:13-15;
The deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt was accomplished through the mighty acts of the Almighty God. Pharaoh was not willing to let the people go in anyway, but the last of all the plagues - death of the firstborns of Egyptians- really destabilized him and all Egyptians so much that they hurriedly ask the children of Israel to leave their country. It was that same night the people of God were delivered and set out on their journey out of Egypt, the land of bondage.
The children of Israel had hardly left than Pharaoh and all the lords of Egypt realized the implication of the freedom granted them. For over four hundred years, the children of Israel had single handedly provided the manpower and human resources that contributed to the growth and sustenance of the economy of Egypt. For many centuries Egyptians have enjoyed rigorous but free services provided by the children of Israel; departure of the children of Israel would definitely have serious effect on Egypt and its economy.
Pharaoh and Egyptians faced with the reality of the implication of the exodus of the children of Israel began to have a change of mind; they pursued hard after them with the intention of bringing them back to Egypt. They were so determined to bring the people back into bondage that Pharaoh prepared all the chariots and army of Egypt for the final onslaught! They drove after the children of Israel with great determination and speed and overtook them by Pi Hahiroth, just before the red sea, where they camped.
The noise of the chariots of the Egyptian army driving with great speed alone had sent great terror into the spines of the children of Israel; they were all gripped by fear and horror as they saw the Egyptian army march after them. It was a dreadful moment! The children of Israel, apparently melted by terrific fear, began to murmur and complain bitterly against Moses and God. They had quickly forgotten all the wonderful works that God wrought to bring them out of Egypt! They failed the test that the circumstance presented to them woefully. They freely spoke against the Almighty God and blamed Moses His servant for taking them out of Egypt.
With Egyptian army and chariots right behind, and the red sea right before the children of Israel, they cried out bitterly as they imagined what their fate would be. Moses trying to calm their perplexed hearts said: “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever”. Moses actually gave this assurance to the people in the meantime while he himself cried unto the LORD to know what he was supposed to do.
Surprisingly, God’s reply to Moses was: “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward”! God seemed to be saying that it was time to move forward and not to cry up! Of course God knew that the barrier of red sea was just ahead of them, yet He ordered “Tell the children of Israel to go forward”. The red sea was not going to part until the people moved forward. One thing we should know always is that, with God, we can never embark on a journey that will end in destruction. With Jesus Christ in our boat, we are bound to sail through no matter the threats and rage of storms, waves and winds.
The instruction of God to us today in the face of barriers and obstacles of life remains “Go forward”! Until we move forward, nothing is going to move! Most times we claim we are waiting on or for God when in actual fact it is God that is waiting for us! God is waiting for us to move against all barriers, barricades, obstacles, limitations and restrictions. We already have His divine backing, but His mighty power will not be at work in our lives if we stay put! It is time to move forward! It is in the face of challenges of life that the power of God is made manifest. Every challenge that comes our way is an opportunity for the manifestation of great power of God to deliver and save.
It is interesting to know that the red sea did not part until the children of Israel actually stepped into it with courage! The barriers and obstacles on our ways cannot stand when we are determined to move forward! He that is us is greater than all opposition and resistance out there. This is not the time to quit, turn back or grumble against God. Let us go forward.
Go forward! Remember God moves only with those who move!
