A Good Doctor to a Great Physician
Tom walked into the cardiac unit at St. Anthony’s to meet his friend Brad Jennings for lunch. Brad was not just tom’s friend but he was a top-notch cardiac surgeon on the unit.
“Hello Sally is Brad ready for lunch?” He asked.
Sally smiled and said “Dr. Jennings is finishing up with his last patient. If you would like to please have a seat he will be with you in a moment.”
Tom strolled over to the other side of the room and sunk into the big leather chair next to the table of magazines. Tom riffled through the magazines trying to look like he was interested in something but inside his heart he was breaking and he could barely keep a smile on his face. He finally chose a magazine and let out a sigh and started thumbing through the pages in an effort to pass the time while he waited for Brad.
“Hello Tom how are you doing my friend?”
Tom shrugged and said, “ I’m trying to do the best I can.”
Brad walked over to Tom and gave him a bear hug and patted him on the back. “C’mon.” He said. “Lets get something to eat and go talk.” “I think I’ll take you to my favorite thinking place.”
“Where’s that?” said Tom.
“ You will see.” Said brad and he proceeded out the door as Tom followed.
As they rode down the highway Tom was fighting back the tears in his eyes and swallowing hard to keep everything down. Brad pulled into the parking lot at Edgewater Park. It was a perfect day to be there. The early summer breeze was gently blowing and the waves on the water were gently rolling in on the beach. It was very peaceful and calm. Tom and Brad found a bench and sat down to talk. Tom bent over and put his head into his hands and began to weep.
As Tom spoke the brokenness rang through in his voice. “I feel so empty inside. I don’t want to get up in the morning and every part of me hurts. My heart aches with so much pain I don’t know what to do but cry out. Brad please help me. Give me something to get over this.”
The Holy Spirit prodded Brad as he began to speak. “Tom I cant give you what you need but I know a greater physician than me that can help you.” “You’ve heard of him before but you didn’t seem like you were ready to meet him.”
“Brad who is he?” asked Tom.
“He is Jesus” Brad responded.
“You mean that guy from the bible?”
“Yes Tom that’s the one.”
“But those are just stories they aren’t really real are they?”
“ Yes, They are and the bible says in John 3:16 that God so Loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” “Tom you said you wanted something to get over this and you’re being offered the greatest gift of all. You can have eternal life and Jesus already paid the price. Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." God’s word says
for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. Gods’ words also say that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Tom do you want to be forgiven for your sins?”
Tom sat hunched over on the bench with his hands in his face and as the tears rolled down he cried out “Lord forgive me, Lord please forgive me.”
Brad wrapped his arms around his friend and he said, “I will help you pray.”
When they were finished Tom looked at brad and asked, “What do I do now?”
"Well” said Brad, “I will give you a bible to read and study and I encourage you to visit my church. The more you read and pray and worship the more you will learn and grow in the Lord. The bible says in Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Tom sighed a huge sigh of relief and said, “ I ‘m already starting to feel that peace. Thank-You Brad for sharing your Jesus with me.”
Brad chuckled “ He’s your Jesus now too.”
