Be Thou My Vision
By Anne H. Harrell
The song “Be Thou My Vision” has always been a song that I have really enjoyed hearing. Not to long ago while practicing the song with my daughter to be sung in church one Sunday morning I had begun to see the true meaning of “Be Thou My Vision.” In the mist of singing the song I had to stop and look at the words the true meaning hit me like a ton of bricks. I was moved to tears when I realize its true meaning of the song. When I stopped and thought about why Christ is my vision it was because He first loved me. 1 John 4:19 (KJV) “We love Him, because He first loved us.”
“High King of heaven, my victory won, may I reach heaven’s joys. O bright heaven’s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision O Ruler of all.” This last stanza has great meaning when you stop and think about what it refers to. The main grist of that verse when we stop and think about it is who our Lord really is. He is our High King! God loves us so much that He wants the very best for us, His children. With Christ as my Ruler, whatever happens in my life: with my eyes fixed on Christ I have no fear. Christ will make things right if not here on earth in Heaven all things will be made perfect. With my eyes fixed on Christ; He will guide every foot step along the way.
Jesus is our High King. He is the reason for my living. Christ loved me so much that He died for me a sinner who is not worthily of His saving grace. What would be the reason worth living for if we didn’t have anything to look forward to when our life here on earth is over? There is nothing. Our lives would be empty and void. When I die I know without a doubt that I will be with my Savior in Heaven. I will see Him face to face. I will be able behold His perfect face and to hug Him and thank Him for dying on the cross for me a sinner.
When we have placed our faith totally in the hands of our Heavenly Father, we will find that He will direct our paths in the most rewarding way. We need to ask Him daily to forgive us for our sins. We need to come boldly before the throne of God asking Him to forgive us for our sins and help us not to be tempted by evil means. We are not sinless. It is our nature to sin daily. If we say that we don’t sin then we are lying to ourselves. 1 John 3:8-9 (ESV)
“Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. “
Our hopes and dreams are most fulfilled when we have Christ as our purpose for living. Our darkest moments are easy to bear when we have Christ in our foresights.
I look forward to the day that I reach Heaven’s shores; what a joy that will be when we see our Savior, the One who died for us on a cross. There is no one here on this earth that will take the punishment that Christ has taken for us. Christ thought about us many years ago. We weren’t even born on this earth yet He knew when we would be here upon this earth one day when He called out our name while He was hanging on that cross. He loved us so much that He took all the sin of the world on His shoulders. How much more could Our Savior do for us? Yet you know we don’t have that clear vision but one day before too long we will have the clearest vision and understand better what Christ has done for us. What we claim here are earthly processions will one day burn up. What will not burn is our righteousness before God.
The victory of living my life for Jesus has been the most beautiful thing in my life. Christ leads me down paths that are peaceful and relaxing. I am led down paths beside the still waters. When we have invited Christ to be our Lord, we will find that no matter what comes our way that the Lord will see us through our darkest hours. I know that I can do any thing with the help of my Savior. “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” Phil. 4:13 (KJV)
Putting Christ first in our lives we will find that life will be much easier when He is our vision. I find with myself that when Jesus is the one I have my eyes on my heart is a lot more peaceful and runs smoother with Christ as my High King. When we are walking with God, we feel so much better.
.
Thank you Lord for being with us when we are stressed out. You are our vision. With you our hopes and dreams are fulfilled. Placing you at the center of our vision we will never go wrong. Thank you Jesus for loving us even when we aren’t loveable. In Jesus Name, AMEN.
