Former architect and work at home Dad fulfills his lifelong passion
By Jackie O’Neal
Manoj Vijayan, Chief Designer of Marketing Edge Design, originally trained as an architect at Manipal Institute of technology in India, but never ceased to nurture a lifelong passion for illustration. Manoj still vividly recalls cartooning for friends and family as a child. “I was very interested in art and design, and spent lots of time cartooning for friends and making comic strips,” he said.
Manoj thrives on helping his clients solve any design problems and finds it equally stimulating to connect with new people all over the world- on and off line.
Marketing Edge Design specializes in E-book and POD covers, logos and web graphics.
While working in the field of architecture, he quickly discovered he craved more of a challenge than his vocation could offer. “After college, I worked as an architect’s assistant for a few years, but somehow something seemed to be missing. Finally, I realized that I wanted to directly get involved in drawing and making art- that was where my heart was at,” he noted.
After purchasing his first PC, about ten years ago, new design vistas opened up for him, and he began to envision the potential of launching into design and illustration as a full-time endeavor. “It was a revelation, especially when I got into the graphics programs and tested my own skills,” he said.
Success finally came together when he joined forces with a Canadian internet partner. “My work was finally exposed to a much wider audience. Most of my work has been met with a lot of appreciation, and I’ll always be grateful to my first clients and partner for getting us out there,” he said.
In addition, to owning and operating Marketing Edge Design, Manoj creates cartoons and illustrations for Paramount Airways India’s in flight magazine and I.T.mag, a magazine that tracks technology trends.
As a work at home parent, Manoj enjoys the benefits of working on creative projects while having the flexibility to spend quality time with his family, his wife, Jo and their 9 year-old son, Karan, who exhibits his father’s design talent. “As the pace of life gets more hectic for everyone, I see many parents too pressured at work to spend time with their kids,” he said.
Marketing Edge Designs offers a variety of design services from E-book/ actual cover design to cartooning and illustration.
