The Woman In The Mirror

She wearily pushed back the worn, musky-smelling bedcovers and willed
her feet to touch the cold, bare floor. She sighed, and as though in a
trance, made her way down the long, dark hall to the bathroom mirror.

She reached up and tugged at the dirty string dangling from the naked
bulb; exploding light momentarily blinded her. She winced and held her
eyes closed tight until she could adjust to the harsh, glaring light.

When she opened her eyes, she gasped at the face of the stranger
staring back at her. Her cheeks were sunken in; her eyes were
empty-looking and sad. This stranger bore a faint resemblance to
someone she used to know, but who was she?

As the woman gazed more intently into the mirror, she realized she was
staring at a reflection of herself...the woman she had become. Bitter
tears ran down her face, like water at the sink where she stood.

Questions began to prod her mind, each one demanding an answer...
questions like, "What are you doing here?" "How are you going to
get out?"

In a split-second of time she was no longer a tormented woman
struggling with shame and regret; she was an innocent little girl,
standing at the altar of a small country church, with the other girls
and boys of her Sunday School class. With joy and conviction she
sang with them:

"Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so!"

The scene vanished, forcing her to stare, once more, at reality.
New questions began to invade her mind...

"Could it be that Jesus still loves me? Could it be that He is the way
out of this mess I've made of my life?" And, "Could it be that He is the
only way?"

A shiver of new energy ran through her used and discarded body; like
an electrical current it revived her soul.

Hope stirred in her, and the woman in the mirror knew, this time, she
was going to make it.

As she turned and walked from the room, her singing heart beat fast to
the rhythm of four little words dancing around in her head....

"Jesus is the Way! Jesus is the way!"

..."I am come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
John 10:10 (NIV)

This brought tears to my eyes. I am reminded of when God picked me up from the ruins. I am so glad that He did. Thanks for sharing this Barbara and keep letting God use you for His glory.

Not only is Jesus the Way... but The Way loves ME? Profound! Awesome story, Sister. I think I know that lady... or I must have had a really vivid dream about her... or maybe I was her. :::smile::: But then, Love lifted me! It's so good to read your works. You are such a wonderful blessing!

Barbara, as I read this article I was reminded of the day I stood looking in the mirror and wondering what I had become! How had I let things get to the point of total dispair.

I recall that moment as if it was a few minutes ago.

I am also reminded of the wonderful love of Jesus! How he changed me and how He was right there to transform me!

That woman in the mirror was me! Blessings, YSICJ Jounda

What a thought provoking article. Very well written. 'Behold, He makes everything new - and the old is past.' Once we are in Christ, we are a new creation. Thank you for sharing this.

What a lovely message of hope! It is so good to know that no matter how bad things get, no matter how low we think we have sunk - that is where Jesus is..waiting.
Thank you for blessing the start of my day - it will stay with me much longer!

What a lovely piece. It speaks to me of the quickening power of the Spirit, Who is able to renew our joy in the Lord and drive away the gloom of the passing years. Thanks.

Jesus is the Answer to whatever we face today. This story really spoke to me. I feel like that woman at times. "Hope stirred in her, and the woman in the mirror knew, this time, she was going to make it." This time, we ARE going to make it!
