Every Christmas Eve I participate in a drama at our church. It’s the one time of year I find myself backstage experiencing the full force of the congregation worshiping. It’s beautiful, powerful... so sacred.
The last song before we went on was “O Holy Night”. My mom's favorite. She would request it every time we sang carols at her convalescent hospital. Although her voice was a bit weaker than years past, all the verses were remembered and recited.
While waiting in the wings I could hear her voice proclaiming the chorus in my mind. Three more minutes and I would be in full stage manager mode. I purposely reigned in my grief; yet even with my best stoic powers, I was not able to stop the tears from leaking out of my eyes.
Then it occurred to me, “Wasn’t the Lord at this very moment receiving our gift of worship? Were the angels singing along too? Wouldn’t it be just like mom to join in with her crackly voice?”
One minute to go. As my eyes landed on the backstage sheer curtains, I was drawn to the twinkling lights that were shining behind them. It was our starry night backdrop for the shepherd’s scene, but in that moment the veiled divider represented two dementions. Two worlds celebrating the arrival of the Savoir. Two worlds united by love. Us here, them there. It was a comforting reminder that someday I will be on the other side standing next to my mom and so many others I miss. On that day we’ll belt out our own expressions of worship together.
Until then, Merry Christmas mom. Merry Christmas Jesus. Places everybody!
”Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
Luke 2:14 NASB
