“I will not forget you because I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands”(Isa 49:16 NIV)
At heart, people yearn to be accepted. Yet feelings of loneliness affect all types and ages. Temporary though it is, isolation produces detrimental effects upon one’s mental and physical health. However, by peeking into the life of Rev. Dr. George Matheson, we discover a compelling ‘story-song’ of restoration and hope.
During his twentieth year Dr. Matheson became totally blind and never married. Years before, he was engaged until his finance’ learned that he would become ‘totally blind’. Furthermore, his own sister’s marriage doubled the pain of Matheson’s intense loneliness. Yet, he looked heavenward and penned the meaningful hymn, ‘O Love That Will Not Let Me Go’.
Perhaps we may ponder this glorious hymn. If so, we learn that pure love has as its’ ultimate source God. In fact, love consists not in our loving God but in His initiative to love us. To the end that He sent His Son as payment for our wrongdoings. Additionally, the ultimate goal of God’s love is for sinners to accept Him and then display that same affection toward others.
In view of that, we realize a ‘maturing love’ casts out and refuses to tolerate fear. By all means a fully developing love gives reassurance to a believer that he or she is right with God. To be exact, our love is a response to His love: ‘God so loved the world includes all people, not just believers’.
“Even though weeping may endure through the night, joy comes with the morning” (Psalm 30)
*Dear Father, grant us an inward affection that leads to self-giving. May we abound in mercy and forgiveness toward others and help us to experience Your boundless love’ Amen.
