Then He began to teach them and declare, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.” Mark 11:17 NIV
Even while in anger, Jesus taught the people. He wanted the evil deeds of the wrongdoers exposed. Certainly the house of God would be a place for prayer for all who gathered within. Should this not also extend to the immediate surrounding area? Were people only to pray while actually within the confines of the temple itself?
How is it that these men were also accused by Christ of being robbers? They charged exorbitant amounts for the birds and animals sold which would be used as sacrificial offerings. They also charged fees to convert foreign currency into local currency. They were thus robbing those who were buyers within the marketplace. This was certainly wrong, and Christ exposed it.
When we are in God’s house, or around it, is our mind devoted to Him, or are we consumed with worldly thoughts? Give time to God each day. He should be at the center of your heart.
