“I, Wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion. To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech." (Proverbs 8:12-13)
Why do politicians come in all shapes forms and fashions? And why are some good, some bad, and some simply mediocre? One need only retreat back in history, back to the Garden of Eden.
You see, our living Creator, the one who made mankind in His image (Genesis 1:26-27), did not make us a bunch of robots. He made each of us with a free will to choose good or evil. (Genesis 2:16-17)
Ever since mankind's fall in that garden (Genesis 3:1-7), all of us are now born with inherited sin (Romans 3:23), in need of a redeemer. So, with this innate birthright in mind, all of us, including those in the career of politics, are either unredeemed, or by the grace of God, have been redeemed. (Romans 5:1-2) Thus, we see this current ungodly approach in politics.
Can you see now why America’s populace has become so skeptical when it comes to politics? One need only look around the corner, to see cynicism raise its ugly face, both in our government leadership and those of us being led. And sadly to say, even the hallowed halls of Religion are now affected.
Realize that the state has certain obligations and so do we. This explanation is being labeled that of Democracy.
Why has America’s electorate become so indifferent, with a side of a lack of interest or lack of concern? Why has our democratic system gone amok? Why all the apathy?
Maybe it’s simply a subtle form of rebellion against God. This can surely take place virtually overnight if one fails to seek the truth and make assessments based on Biblical convictions.
With this in mind, how do we people of faith address this ever-rising mindset of apathy? The solution of this syndrome is obvious. We need only return to God's word. In (II Chronicles 7:14) God gives His people a plan of action, along with a rewarding promise for our work.
And in (II Timothy 3:16-17), God gives us a lesson plan in the study of His Word, to affect our plan of action.
So let's go for it. And in doing so, one of our top priorities should be our elected officials. They need our witness, as well as our family, friends and co-workers. We must not only be a spectator, we must be a dedicated mouthpiece for the Gospel, as well.
I realize as Christians, often times it may be hard to wrap our minds around the fact that our God, the all-powerful, all-knowing Creator of this great universe, may be appointing us as His mouthpiece. However, when this does occur, we must be ready and willing to spread His gospel within our surroundings and beyond. (Matthew 28:19-20) (Acts 1:8)
There's nothing wrong with expressing out concern as Christians by writing to the newspapers, lobbying and even joining a political party for the witness of the gospel. When's the last time you attended your city council meeting? There, I rest my case.
We may even run for a political office as a way of serving God. Just stay clear of today's cynical world if you do. In other words, don't let the world squeeze you into its proverbial mold. (Romans 12:1-2)
Yes, I must admit, we have our work cut out for us. The stakes are high, but so are the rewards.(Ruth 2:12) (II Chronicles 15:7) (Psalm 58:11) (Jeremiah 31:16) (Rev 22:12)
So, in conclusion, I trust you will enjoy the gist of this little closing poem. Can you put a name or face to these infamous poetry characters ? Thus, maybe you can put it to a good melody and sing out, as well. Amen !
For it's all for one, and it's one for all
Politicians, O how they all seem dazed
Some are bright, while others are crazed
The organizer who thought he could win
Simply by using his phone and his pen
The lead lady who spoke from the hill
We must pass it to see what's in the bill
The old man puts his big hat in the ring
Then he breaks out and to all does sing
The fair lady decides to give it all a whirl
Walking around with her dress in a swirl
The young lady appears on the scene
Treating our great country with no esteem
The young man seems to know the truth
As he explores the country’s voting booth
The new one who wears the unusual garb
Takes a knife to freedom and starts to carve
One and all seem to have the right solution
While bringing out the government cushion
Where does our great country go from here?
Never doubt, never cry and surely never fear
God is on our side and He is always near
Yes, He appoints both the good and the bad
For the truths of His gospel to all can be had
Author's Postscript
Did you know that government authorities (assuming politicians fit the category) are established by God Himself? The Apostle Paul, speaking inspired by God's Holy Spirit, affirms they are established by God (Romans 13:1), instituted by Him (Romans 13:2), God's servants (Romans 13:4,6), and are agents of wrath (Romans 13:4). Therefore we, as believers, are to submit to authorities (Romans 13:1.5), pay our taxes (oops, have I hit a nerve here?) (Romans 13:6) and give them appropriate respect (Romans 13:7) You see, God is a God of order and the authority is simply an instrument of that order.
Remember, joining a political party is simply another example of our free will. However, if or when, a particular political party ceases to follow the principles of God, it's time to leave that affiliation. As Christians our first and foremost loyalty is to our Creator God.
"But Peter and the apostles answered, 'We must obey God rather than men.'" (Acts 5:29)
So, may I ask you, are you qualified and registered to vote? As you probably surmised, America's upcoming election is probably the most important election of our country's young history. Our nation's freedom and liberty may be at stake here.
We must all do our part in holding to America's self-evident truths of "All men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, these being Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
And we must keep our God-centered mottos such as "The land of the free and the home of the brave," "One nation under God" and "In God we trust"
Dr, Larry P. Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, put it this way,
"The framers of the American Constitution combined the best political ideas of the past with innovations in what The Federalist called an improved science of politics: federalism, separation of powers, and checks and balances. Doing so, they created a form of government which had, in the words of James Madison, "no model on the face of the earth."
"In recent decades, the way our government operates has departed from the Constitution. It has become less limited, and our liberties less secure."
Again, I say mankind in its natural state, is inherited evil, tainting all forms of authority. We must do our part to change this phenomenon.
Remember, "Why do you judge your brother ? Or why do you show contempt for your brother ? For we shall all stand before the judgement seat of Christ" (Romans 14:10)
