When we rest on the promises of God's word, we can rest into a sweet and peaceful sleep with the assured knowledge that when God is taking over our life, we can expect a marvellous make over as He has promised us Healing, Protection, Deliverance, an Abundance of Blessings and Unconditional Love for every breath that we take.
We read numerous promises given by God in the Old Testament.
Prophet Isaiah in 42:16 says;” I will lead the blind by a road they do not know, by paths they have not known. I will guide them. I will turn the dark was before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I will not forsake them.
We might have faced a similar situation in life. How many times did we feel the Spirit of God leading us to take a road which we normally would not have taken but some invisible yet strong force compels and leads us to that path and when we do reach this path, we cannot imagine our delight at the hidden treasures that God reveals to us, the treasures of the soul. Such complete happiness and brightness that without the Lord’s intervention, we would not have discovered this.
We also read in Isaiah 41:27-18; “When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them. I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of valleys. I will make the wilderness a pool of water and the dry land springs of water.
Who else but the Lord can make water come out of the rock and in the desert?
He is the Master of all things but it is because of His great love for us that he keeps His promises to rush to our aid and His promises will stay so for a thousand generations.
When God promised Abraham a son even in His old age, he kept His promise. When He promised to be with Moses in the desert leading the Israelites, he did not abandon them for a moment.
The Promised Land as promised by God was given at the appointed time to the Chosen People.
The Ultimate Promise of a Saviour who would free the world from the chains of sin was kept and fulfilled by God himself in the flesh. The Virgin bore a son as promised by Isaiah.
The Bible is full of the promises of God and we could go on and on.
God's promises hold fast not only in times of happiness and prosperity but also in sickness and in trials. As St. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 4:8-12 ; "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.”
Why were the Apostles so willing to endure all the persecutions and martyrdom after receiving the Holy Spirit? Because they rested on the promises of the Risen Lord that they would one day drink the New Wine with Him in the Kingdom of Heaven after having completed their Mission of Baptizing the Nations in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit having preached the Good News of Jesus to them.
I am reminded of a very soul tearing story in a movie on how a young lady who promised to meet her lover after His return from a very long overseas trip makes it to the planned venue on time. They both share a beautiful evening together reliving their love and fondly recalling the first moments of their meeting and how they had fallen deeply in love with each other. The lady clings to the man all through the evening and when he drops her home, he tells her that he would be there first thing in the morning to pick her up so that they could go and meet their circle of friends. The lady then tells him with all the love in her eyes that she will always love him and be there with Him no matter what.
The next morning when the man lands up at her door, he is met by her cousin who opens the door. When he asks to see the lady, the cousin gives him a white and astounded look. He tells the man that the lady had passed away three days ago in a tragic accident with her parents while travelling to a neighbouring state.
The man is shocked beyond words!! He can hardly believe it. He then remembers the parting words of the lady that she would always love him and be with Him. His soul is torn with grief. He realizes that in order to keep her promise to meet him on his return, Her Spirit made the journey from the other world to be with him. After all, the Promise of Love is the greatest Promise!
This may have been a fiction story in a movie. But I am sure that there are many people out there in the world who can vouch to a similar story in real life. Because sometimes Love is so deep that a final visit becomes imperative to the person whom the soul loves the most. The last assurance of Love even in the Spirit.
We know that the Risen Lord walked for forty days on this earth until he ascended into Heaven. He made the Apostles brave, opened their eyes to the meaning of the Scriptures regarding Him and what is most interesting is that He appeared only to the chosen ones and we can conclude these were the ones whom He loved the most and who loved Him tremendously in return.
The Final promise that Jesus gave His disciples was that He would be with them until the end of Time. After He went up to the Father, the Angels promised that Jesus wold return back in the same way that He went up.
We today, the people after almost two thousand years rest on this solid promise on the Lord’s second coming to gather His sheep into the Heavenly Fold. That the Lord will descend from the sky at the sound of the trumpet to take His redeemed people with Him to the New Jerusalem.
This Promise makes our life so beautiful and worthwhile!
