Jeremiah 22:8-9 New International Version (NIV) People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city And the answer will be: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.’”
George Washington was the first President of the United States (1789–97), the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He presided over the convention that drafted the current United States Constitution and during his lifetime was called the “father of his country”. That is why I have chosen his words to validate my ideas presented herein.
America has seen centuries of prosperity compared to others around the world. Our times of low economics has always been higher than other nations' time of affluence. We were created as a great experiment. [underline mine] The establishment of our new government seemed to be the last great experiment for promoting human happiness by a reasonable compact in civil society ... "The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty . . is finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American People."
- George Washington
One that allowed the acceptance of God in the success of our nation... I am sure there never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States; and I should be pained to believe, that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God, who is alone able to protect them. -George Washington
However they were not so naive to believe that everyone held the same beliefs or practiced their religion in the same way. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." —The Constitution. First Amendment.
We have abundant reason to rejoice, that, in this land, the light of truth and reason has triumphed over the power of bigotry and superstition, and that every person may here worship God according to the dictates of his own heart-George Washington
Still today we see a country that is becoming more and more divided. More intolerant, and more closed minded to others who think differently from us. When one side only of a story is heard and often repeated, the human mind becomes impressed with it insensibly. -George Washington in Letter to Edmund Pendleton (22 January 1795)
Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.-George Washington
We have forgotten the attitude carried by our country as its founding. As mankind become more liberal they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protection of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations in examples of justice and liberality. -George Washington
Judah too had abandoned their founding. Kings had become more and more evil, greedy, and the people more rebellious against morality. We look at their practices as barbaric and yet though we may not sacrifice our children to physical idols, we have made our own more devious idols. Money, power, beauty, and physical prowess. Jeremiah 8:4 -6 Jeremiah, say to the people, ‘This is what the Lord says:“‘When people fall down, don’t they get up again? When they discover they’re on the wrong road, don’t they turn back? Then why do these people stay on their self-destructive path? Why do the people of Jerusalem refuse to turn back? They cling tightly to their lies and will not turn around. I listen to their conversations and don’t hear a word of truth. Is anyone sorry for doing wrong? Does anyone say, “What a terrible thing I have done”?No! All are running down the path of sin as swiftly as a horse galloping into battle!
Many of us are watching our nation follow the downfall of Judah and Jerusalem that occurred during Jeremiah's time. And the sad thing is we have the same opportunity to stop this downward spiral just as they did. Jeremiah 22:1-5 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go over and speak directly to the king of Judah. Say to him, Listen to this message from the Lord, you king of Judah, sitting on David’s throne. Let your attendants and your people listen, too. This is what the Lord says: Be fair-minded and just. Do what is right! Help those who have been robbed; rescue them from their oppressors. Quit your evil deeds! Do not mistreat foreigners, orphans, and widows. Stop murdering the innocent! If you obey me, there will always be a descendant of David sitting on the throne here in Jerusalem. The king will ride through the palace gates in chariots and on horses, with his parade of attendants and subjects. But if you refuse to pay attention to this warning, I swear by my own name, says the Lord, that this palace will become a pile of rubble.’
We must each ask are we causing our nation to go the way of Jerusalem and Judah? Will historians look back on our country when it lies in ruin and say of it the same thing of us? Think soberly about this. I leave you with one more quote from George Washington given at his farewell address. May it help you consider these thoughts.
“It is of infinite moment, that you should properly estimate the immense value of your national Union to your collective and individual happiness; that you should cherish a cordial, habitual, and immovable attachment to it; accustoming yourselves to think and speak of it as of the Palladium of your political safety and prosperity; watching for its preservation with jealous anxiety; discountenancing whatever may suggest even a suspicion, that it can in any event be abandoned; and indignantly frowning upon the first dawning of every attempt to alienate any portion of our country from the rest, or to enfeeble the sacred ties which now link together the various parts.”For this you have every inducement of sympathy and interest. Citizens, by birth or choice, of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections. The name of American, which belongs to you in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of patriotism more than any appellation derived from local discriminations. With slight shades of difference, you have the same religion, manners, habits, and political principles. You have in a common cause fought and triumphed together; the independence and liberty you possess are the work of joint counsels, and joint efforts of common dangers, sufferings, and successes. ― George Washington
