Titus 3: 1,2, 9-11 New International Version (NIV)
Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone...But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. You may be sure that such people are warped ...
We live in an age where we see so much division . It is everywhere. It rears its ugly head in verbal attacks, physical attacks and even death. As God's children this ought not to be. The verses above do not represent any political or religious group but all of us as people. God created us to do good.
The only way we can stop this downward, dangerous cycle is to follow the above advice. It is not hard but it does take a choice of will not emotion. Here is the steps we need to follow:
Be respectful of all authorities whether we agree with them or not. In our country if we don't agree we can either vote out those we oppose or change the law through democratic means. Perhaps it is time we teach how a bill is created and how it is passed because as citizens we can introduce a bill to Congress if we know the proper steps. Sure it may take some time but most things do.
Follow the law. We are facing so many conflicts and crisis just because people don't want to follow the law. Rules and laws are created to insure fairness for all and order instead of chaos. When we abandon the rules or laws we create havoc. Just look around.
Look for ways to do good. Instead of focusing on our differences how about we look at how we can help one another. We have had several natural disasters lately and there are many opportunities to help rebuild what has been destroyed. If we focus on what we can do to rebuild we can't be focused on divisive attitudes.
Try consideration and kindness. It is easy to see the negative in others that do not think or act as we do. Perhaps we trip over the fact that they look different. But if you cut us, we all bleed the same kinds of blood. We all have the same kinds of dreams for a good life, and loving family. If we treat others as we wish to be treated we all will get closer to those dreams.
Avoid arguing just to argue. There are different points of view and they are worthy to consider. Just because we don't agree that doesn't mean we cannot find common ground. If you stand on one side of a mountain and I stand on the other side, we both see different views. It's the same mountain but our point of view is different. Likewise many of our differences are based on where we are standing. However, if we listen to each other's view point we have a better vision of what the mountain really looks like and so it is with our life's point of view.
If you can't reason with a divisive person walk away. Let's get back to finding where we can agree and solutions for where we cannot. If someone doesn't really want to find a solution don't stand there and argue it only raises heated emotions. Scripture says avoid them. Sounds like that would end a lot of physical classes. If people would stop hanging out with people that promote division and physical confrontation it wouldn't be long before there would be no mobs to stir up.
Many times we look at Scripture as being religious but perhaps there are some really practical advice in them that is applicable to everyone--not just the religious. However, those of us who profess to be spiritual should practice these six things regardless of what others do. There are only 2 people you need to try to please; God cause He will hold us accountable, and yourself. It really doesn't matter what others do or say when it comes to how you want to be as a person. If you choose to follow the law and seek to do what is right others should not matter. That is a hard attitude to have, because we all have a caring heart and want to be loved and accepted. Still if we practiced the 6 things we are talking about I think we will find many who will like us. More importantly it should make us like ourselves to
