"Now then, stand still and see this great thing the LORD is about to do before your eyes!" I Samuel 12:16
My name is Sandy and I'm a control freak. If they ever organize a 12-step group for this condition, I'll be the first one in line. (Of course, I'll be the one in charge of organizing it and setting up the times...) I like to know what's going to happen, when it's going to happen, exactly what I'm going to do when it happens, and have at least two contingency plans in case something else happens. Standing still is not exactly my strong suit. When nothing's happening, I like to "make" something happen. I may not be doing what I'm supposed to be doing, but at least I'm never bored.
I constantly find myself running around like a crazy person in an effort to “fix” the problem of the day. Meanwhile, God is desperately trying to get my attention so he can show me how he will handle the problem in all his power and majesty. He sends thunder and lightening blazing across the sky in an effort to get my attention and I grumble that I don’t have my umbrella. I’m too busy to recognize God’s hand or to hear his voice. Funny thing is, I think God should be proud of me because I’m such an effective problem solver. It’s no wonder God has to put walls in my way to stop me from running full tilt.
Control freaks like me have a tendency to confuse movement with accomplishment. If I’m busy, then I’m good. If I can fix it, then I’m good. Then at the end of the day, we collapse into bed exhausted and wonder, with a straight face, why we don’t have more energy.
While God appreciates hard work and diligence, there’s a point where we substitute activity for trust. Do I really trust God to take care of me? Do I really trust that he will make a way where I don’t see a way? Am I waiting to hear from the Lord about my direction or am I taking off half-cocked and asking God to bless me on the run?
Perhaps it’s time we all take Samuel’s advice and stand still and see the great things that God is about to do in our lives.

Great advice, Sandra. I have a few "control-freak" qualities myself. Though, I'm mostly just a perfectionist. Either way, God's way is the only perfect way. Seems the two of us have at least got through the first major step of your 12 step program... admitting that we have a problem. :::wink::: Well, at least we know that we have a "higher power" who will see us through to perfection! Lots of love, STAND STILL, Treava
