There is a misconception about how a person's life will be once they enter a committed relationship and this belief starts in high school. When a teenager starts a job, their friends consider them to be boring. A working student can't just go to the school games or dances like they used to. They can't just go “hang out” on Friday and Saturday nights any more due to the fact that most companies need the high school students on the weekends so they can still maintain their grades in school. Having a job in high school is a big responsibility. Employers are looking for dependable students with good grades.
What the peers of these working students don't see, is the fact that a working student no longer needs to ask mom and dad for help paying for things that they want or need. They can go to a movie, or take a loved one out to eat with their own money. Not all parents can not afford to buy their teenager a car when they get a license, so by getting a job, not only can they get a car, but they can get one that they want.
Getting a job as a teenager also helps to insure a better chance of a good future. By purchasing a car, they are building their credit. Maintaining good grades while working, helps on collage applications. It teaches a student responsibility, prioritization skills, communication skills and they learn how to manage their money. To add sugar to the koolaide, they can gain confidence and security in themselves.
Later in life when a person chooses to get married and “settle down” friends think that the newly married couple is doomed to a live of predictability. Not true. When a couple chooses to get married, then two become one, but that does not mean that they have to be joined at the hip. A married couple still has individual minds. Women may not go out for ladies night or guys go on nights out with the guys as often as they did when they were single, but they can still do it. However, where a married couple use to have their nights out, now they are more apt to have couples nights out. Married couples find new friendships and new things that are enjoyable that wouldn't be fun as a single person.
People also believe that when you are married your list of things to do decreases, but it is just the opposite. When you are married, you have another person with interests that differ from yours and you can mix them up and try both points of interest. Sometimes they can do what she enjoys, and sometimes do what he enjoys. It is truly amazing how many things a person never knew they enjoyed until a spouse brought it into their lives.
One of the biggest misconceptions however, is on Christianity. People seem to think that just because you are Christian, it means you can't have any fun. They don't see the rewards that are offered to Christians. A good majority of non-Christians believe that if you don't go to the bar and get tipsy then you aren't having any fun, but there is a lot more to having fun then getting buzzed. Some Christians still enjoy playing pool or bowling, for example, they just know how to have fun without drinking or using drugs.
Christians also find joy in helping others. Not because they are being told to, but because the feeling of joy. Joy in your heart when you help someone in need is a feeling that can't be replaced. Many Christian organizations have groups that travel around the country and even to other countries to help rebuild communities and towns that have been destroyed due to weather or war. They don't get paid for doing it, they do it because it feels good to help. By doing this, they can find themselves making lifelong friends.
It is amazing how everyone would not want to live the life of a Christian. The promises made by God, for all his children that believes in him, greatly outweigh any kind of Earthly desires that a person may have. To know that someone greater then yourself will always be watching over you and taking care of you is astounding. To know that he loved you so much, he gave everything including his own son to us, is breathtaking. To know that as Christians, we have eternity waiting for us up in heaven is more than words can describe.
Doing what is right and doing what is responsible is not boring. It is the most rewarding thing a person will ever need to do. Just because we have our fun in different ways, does not mean that we are not having fun.
