The God Who Notices Us
When we come to the place in our lives where success, possessions, wealth, popularity, or anything of the world fails to satisfy, we can despair of ever finding true fulfillment for our empty hearts. We were created by God for close, personal relationship with him as our heavenly Father. Seeking meaning elsewhere leaves us spiritual orphans.
Jesus came to bring us home. When he walked the earth, he astounded many with his authoritative, wisdom-filled teachings and dramatic healings. And he never shied away from confronting the self-righteous religious leaders who counted their traditions as more important than the welfare of people.
This spiritual revolution awakened hungry hearts and when Jesus called them out, they followed.
Levi the tax collector, more commonly known as Matthew, was one of these. Men of his occupation developed notoriety for extorting money over and above the Roman tax and then lining their own pockets. He paid the price by suffering the rejection and disdain of his own people. Matthew eventually realized his wealth could do nothing to plug the hole in his heart.
Then, in Luke 5: 27-28 we find that, “He (Jesus) went out and noticed a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax booth and He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’ And he (Levi) left everything behind and got up and began to follow Him.” Levi had found someone who looked past the reputation, past what man valued, past his sins and mistakes, and saw the longing of his soul. He was loved for who he was and not what he did. Everything else lost its appeal. Levi’s life became so closely knit with Jesus, that he later wrote one of the four gospels found in the New Testament.
PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for your unconditional love and forgiveness. Thank you that no one is too insignificant or too sinful for you to notice, forgive, and draw into an eternal relationship with you. Amen.
