In the Old Testament book of Judges chapter 6 Gideon is visited at the wine press by the Angel of the LORD which many believe to be a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus the Son of God. The Angel of the LORD would see in Gideon what he didn’t see in himself, “a mighty man of valor” who could go forth in that might and save his nation Israel. Theologians call such a visitation a Christophany. It makes sense in this case because in v.13 Gideon addresses the Angel of the LORD as “adoni” or our equivalent of “sir” or “mister” but 2 verses later he addresses Him as “Adonai” which is used of God. It is gradually dawning on Gideon just to Whom he is talking and Who it is Who is calling him to be Israel’s deliverer against the Midianites. The Midianites had been oppressing Israel and not only at midnite either. (Just kidding, couldn’t resist!) But the fact that Gideon addressed the Angel of the LORD (Jesus) as a man and then as God is not by accident, it is prophetic, for Jesus would indeed be truly man while remaining truly God when he would take on human flesh in the not very distant future. (about 1150 years) This passage is only one of several passages in the Bible where the Angel of the LORD makes an appearance. (Note that the definite article is used in these instances and not "an angel of the LORD." Also the expression doesn't seem to be used after the incarnation of Jesus.)
