Encouragement
In life we either break rules for the better or worse. Sometimes it helps us or at other times it can be detrimental. We even do it at times to accommodate others, be partial, show our favor or to help others. Rules broken for a positive outcome and meaningful purpose holds no guilt.
If we look back, there are incidents where rules were broken for a damaging outcome. Like when Eve ate the forbidden fruit and convinced Adam to do the same, they lost the right to live in paradise and Sin entered the world.
When Jacob broke the rules and stole the birthright of his brother Esau at the insistence and ploy of His mother Rebekah, he received the blessing from his father Isaac meant for his brother to be carried down the generation line.
In the book of Exodus, we see how the Israelites broke the rules when Moses went up Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments. When he came down the mountain and saw how the people had made a molten calf and was worshipping it after having forgotten how God saved them from the Eygyptians and fed them in the desert, he was so angry that he broke the two tablets which held the Laws of God.
Later we see how each generation which followed kept forgetting what the Lord had done for them and how he had led them to the Promised Land, they went after pagan Gods and idol worship. They broke the rules time and again.
But in the New Testament we see how God broke the rules to save the very people who had sinned against Him. Where his anger was once roused, God now showed mercy unto His people. He no longer punished them but sent His own Son to take upon himself our punishment on the Cross.
The rules changed. Salvation was won for us and a promise of assured entry into the Kingdom of God. Death was destroyed and everlasting life was put into place forever.
Today do we follow the rules for the better or break the rules to suit our own needs?
We need to pray for the gift of discernment to decide when the rules ought to be followed or broken in a positive light. Only the Holy Spirit can give us this insight for his Wisdom is far greater than any wise mind on this earth.
Do we at times break rules to improve our spiritual life? Like when at work do we take a short break to recite prayers at regular intervals? A moment with God just between Him and us to give us added strength to go through the routine of life.
There was once a man named Jim who worked in a factory for long hours daily with just a half hour lunch break. No one was allowed to go out of the premises during this time. But Jim befriended the security guard and flouted the rules every afternoon just to visit a Church nearby. He would enter inside the church, kneel down before the Blessed Sacrament and just say; " Jesus, this is Jim checking in today." He would then hurry back to work. This went on for some time and the pastor of the church too got used to Jim's daily routine. One week Jim failed to show up at the Church. The worried pastor inquired at his workplace and was told that Jim was terribly sick in the hospital. When the pastor visited him, he found that Jim was cheerful even though he did not have any visitors. When the pastor questioned him about this, Jim replied that every afternoon he has a visitor who sits in the chair besides his bed and tells him; "Jim, this is Jesus checking in today." Jim concludes by saying his last wish is to lay his head on Jesus' lap and go to be with him forever. The pastor leaves the hospital with tears in his eyes. Soon afterwards Jim leaves for his heavenly abode to check into Heaven forever.
A very moving story! We see how Jim went against the odds and dictates of his work place to make that special moment happen between him and Jesus each afternoon.
When people are in love, they would like to break every rule and get away from the world and be on their own because every second of being together is priceless for them.
Likewise we have to hold on to every moment that we give to the Lord each new morn that we awake with His grace and power.
When we break the rules for His sake to give him priority in life we can be rest assured that there will be no detention in store for us ever.
Let us give it all to Him every chance that we get because the rules of the heart are self styled rules that work on the principles of Love, emotions and deep feelings hand in glove with Praises and Worship before the One who made the right rules for us.
