ON HIS SHOULDERS
The presidential election this year has me completely on edge. There’s so much riding on it domestically and internationally, and the candidates could not be more different. We are not only electing a man to office, but an ideology. Whoever wins this election will determine the course our nation will take for years to come, good or bad. I’ve watched every debate. I’ve read all the pundits. My mood goes up and down with the polls.
In the midst of my stress, I read an interesting poem online on this very subject. The poet referenced Isaiah 9:6 which reads, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” The source of my stress is simple. I have taken personal responsibility for who gets elected. I’ve made it my sworn duty to convince millions of people that who I’ve chosen is the better candidate. While I do have a great responsibility in exercising my right to make an informed vote, the Bible clearly states who’s in charge.
Paul wrote to the Romans “Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (Romans 13:1) This statement is staggering when you consider Paul was currently under the authority of a government who was holding him prisoner and trying to stamp his religion out of existence.
It is our responsibility as Christians and good citizens to exercise our right to vote. We must exercise that right prayerfully and armed with pertinent information. We must do our part and trust God with the results.

Amen! Very well written. I am reminded of Daniel chapter 4 and the letter by Nebuchadnezzar. This is not only a perfect word for this time in our government, but a word that needs to be spoken often in our churches... not necessarily by our leaders, but more powerfully by us on behalf of our leaders. I'm thankful for the opportunity to read this straightforward piece. Treava
