Wasting Yourself on Jesus
By Robert Schaetzle
“ While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head. But some were indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted?” [Mark 14:3-4NASB]
How short sighted we can become as the saying goes, when we don’t see the ‘big picture.’ My 2 year old granddaughter illustrates this so well when grandpa teases, attempting to get her attention and my granddaughter shouts at me; “MINE!”
The apostles were no different. They all had a possessive regard of human reasoning not to be wasteful. But our Lord knew Mary’s heart went far beyond any worldly concern for economic value.
If we ask ourselves; “What is waste?” It must be defined as ‘giving more than necessary.’ But remember, reading further; “Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.” Mark 14:9
In Mary’s heart you might ask, was she giving too much for receiving something too little? Mary’s faith and love that come down from heaven was far greater, and more worthy of monetary value. The disciples weren’t there yet.
This anointing Mary provided to Jesus, in preparation for His burial was to recognize; her love for her Savior, was wasting herself completely beyond anything that could be purchased. We each have this same challenge; ‘to waste ourselves on Jesus’, maybe, even remembered down through the ages of time and beyond.
