It was one of the premier sporting events of all sporting history. In 1980, Herb Brooks took a bunch of no-name college kids against a professional Russian team and beat them on their way to winning the gold medal against Finland. Russians had won every gold medal for the last twenty years and the American team was considered a twelfth seed.
It was termed, “The Miracle on Ice,” with a movie of the same name. I am not sure if it really was.
The Americans reported for camp and when asked what team they played for, they would all shout out their college affiliations. After a particularly hard practice, one tired and exasperated player shouted, “I play for the United States of America.” That became a rallying cry for the team. The rest of course, is history.
Whose team are we playing on as individuals today? Jesus said in John 17:21, “May they be one as you Father are in me and I am in you.” Are we on God’s team today? Wait a minute! Christians by in large haven’t had a winning season for a long time. Scripture tells us that God doesn’t change. What does it mean to be on God’s team?
We seem to foster individualism like it was a badge of honor. Everyone does something with the help of someone else. Even the Lone Ranger had Tonto. If we were on a winning team we would do things that caused wins in God’s Kingdom. We would follow the playbook (the Bible). We would believe in the coach and what He said. The coach would even play along side of us. Talk about a power forward.
Winning is hard work. We are on a winning team with Jesus. We already know what He said. It is in the Bible. Maybe it is time to practice your spiritual slap shot?
