“When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” (Deuteronomy 6:10-12 / NIV)
When good things happen in your life, to whom do you give thanks? Though blessings come in a variety of ways, they are always from God. Other people may be used as a transit for mercies, kindness, and acts of goodness you receive, but they are ultimately from God. Your strengths are from Him: academic giftedness, athletic ability, mechanical inclinations, musical talents, culinary skills, attractive appearance, wisdom, discernment – these are from God alone.
You may think, “I deserve a little credit for my hard work, don’t I?” But Scripture tells us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17 / KJV) Our strength and resources, including our ability to work hard, are from God. He will even give you dreams and desires that He has purposed especially for you. God is the source of all our blessings.
Thank you, Lord, for every provision. Amen.
