THE SIGNS OF AGING
Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength fails. Psalm 71:9 NASB
It has been said that getting old is not for sissies. Truer words were never spoken. Although they say that wisdom comes with age, they don’t tell us about the down side of growing old. Nobody tells us about the disturbing signs of getting old.
As our bodies enter the age of being antiques, there are physical changes that take place. The skin over our bones becomes thin resulting in more and larger bruisers. Our backs ache more easily and our knees are less able to stand still or walk long distances. Our eyesight weakens due to macular degeneration and our hearing goes south with each year. For most of us, our foreheads get larger as our hair turns grey and recedes. Our bones become ever more brittle and seem to break for no good reason. Even our teeth become more susceptible to cavities as the enamel wears away.
There is, however, one benefit of growing older. Until or unless our memories fade with the onset of Alzheimer’s, we do become wiser with age. Our life experiences build up and are cataloged in our brains. These memories guide our every day lives so that we don’t make the same mistakes twice. This increase in wisdom also allows us to better advise the young, even though they tend to ignore our words of wisdom.
Father, I thank you for guiding me as I grow older, and help me from becoming a burden to my family. Amen
