Genesis 13:11 – So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east.
We want to follow our dreams, even if sometimes it leads to an endless pit of misery. Most of us are drawn to the center of where the action is, hoping that in the end, we will be declared successful, whatever the word success meant.
Lot is our example of how it is to be successful and prosperous in an evil society. His story started good with a caring mentor who taught him the love of God and how to manage His blessings. Lot prospered under the guidance of his uncle Abram, but they have to part and he has to determine his own path. When given the opportunity to choose, he forgot God and instead depended on his gut! In Genesis 13:10 it says, ’Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered..’ He selected the ‘greener pasture’ so to speak.
Lot was not bothered by the description of the place, as stated in Genesis 13:13, ‘Now the people of Sodom were wicked and sinning greatly against the Lord.’ Maybe he thought Abram’s teaching about God will give him the strength not to forget God. His integration in the community happened in three stages.
The first stage, we read in Genesis 13:12, ‘... Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.’ He lived outside the city but close to it. The pull of prosperity was stronger than the wickedness of the community.
In the second stage, we read in Genesis 14: 12, ‘They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possession, since he was living in Sodom.’ So after some time, Lot finally lived inside the city, and when war broke out with the neighboring state, his family was taken off as spoils of war. When you are inside a community, you are expected to participate in its activities and we may wonder how Lot was able to cope with the evil practices around him.
Finally, in Genesis 19:1, we read ‘… and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city...’ Elders and leaders of a city in those days sit in the gateway where they discuss and decide affairs of the city. It is also in the gateway where business transactions are confirmed and witnessed by the elders.
Lot sitting in the gateway of the city meant he has assumed a position of leadership in the city. He prospered and became a leader of the city. He became too attached to the city to the point where he does want to leave it even if God told him to leave. God’s mercy was upon him when he was saved from the fire, but he was so devastated to have lost everything.
The story of Lot reminds us of our stubbornness. We want to do things on our own and only come to God when things do not work out well. Maybe we need to ask now if our dreams are aligned with God’s plan for us.
